ST Format.com

Post by STFormatJez »

Hey!

I've just up'd a massive update to http://www.stformat.com the site dedicated to the best selling mag for the ST. It's a completely new look and feel and is still kinda in Beta at the moment. There are loads of new STF game reviews with lots more to follow, including News, Features and Hardware & Software reviews as well as adverts from STF.

I've also now got all issue cover disk scans and a lot of index content.

I'll be adding full page scans from STF to go with the on-line content in the near future.

Let me know if you have any (sensible!) suggestions or feedback.

Cheers,
Jez

Looks to be a very impressive site, do you plan on actually having a complete scan of every page from every issue or is this feature yet to come? Or have I just blatantly missed something?

Thanks for the feedback guys,

I've found a few niggles & bugs, which I'll aim to fix soon.

I've got plenty of content (game reviews and other bits and bobs) lined up to go live over the coming weeks and months - next up will be the STF review of Elite 2 - Frontier, in early July. I'll also aim to get the full page scans up for this and then for the other existing reviews soon after (some time in July).

Unfortunately I'm limited for web space and very limited for my time, so overall progress will probably be quite slow.

If anyone wants to provide the text (OCR'd from scans - or just manually typed out!!) of any reviews / articles etc, I'll happily upload and credit you on the site.

Cheers,
Jez

As I said earlier a site with lots of potential, would be great if you could get the STF issues in a format that is readable like this http://issue.monkeymag.co.uk/1U4cfcda3b310a0012.cde

Don't see the point in going to the trouble of OCR'ing the reviews, when some high quality web scans will do. Would estimate even if you made each issue a PDF would only work out about 10meg per issue

Review of Sensible Soccer now on-line, with full page scans to boot! http://www.hollinsheads.com/stf/games/games-253.html :D

All future reviews will also have full pages scans and I'll also upload scans for existing reviews. Little chance of me scanning entire issues though I'm afraid - simply too much scanning for me :x

As always, any constructive feedback welcomed :D

Scans are cool, but OCR can be more readable and indexable. With scans, navigation is also less easy.

There's no reason we can't have both though, right?

Excellent!

I loved ST Format, and I still have many issues and cover disks. Please tell me if you need anything?

I also have a large number of the Wonderdisks that were only available to subscribers. Its the only magazine I ever subscribed to, before or since. And a joy to get new software every month! Was sad when it went out of print... but the software was getting less and less anyway by that time.

In its heyday, it was an excellent mag. Very funny, good reviews and articles, and I read it from cover to cover. Several times!!

I like pdfs too, but whatever form you post that ST Format material in, it is totally cool! Very pleased to have just taken a quick browse at the site!

I started a project to scan, OCR and HTML-ize all the ST Formats, but gave up when I realised the enormity of such a task. The first four issues are available here: http://www.stickhead.pwp.blueyonder.co. ... index.html

Feel free to cut and paste any of that content to your site, Jez. And all the best, your staying power clearly excels mine! ;)
