Feel free to cut and paste any of that content to your site, Jez. And all the best, your staying power clearly excels mine! ;)
Sounds like a task that's begging for automation... I did see on Youtube that someone made a book scanner using Lego Nxt and IIRC a digital camera on a tripod. Cool :)

What's the hardest part; scanning them, OCRing (never done it) or wrapping it up in HTML?

I guess that leaving them in PDF will cut out 2/3 of the work.
But putting them into HTML does cut down on the disk space needed.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

I agree the best thing is to have both full page scans and OCR versions of articles / reviews. That way, people can get a flavour of what the mag actually looked like from the scans but also have the OCR'd text, which is much easier to read. This is what I hope I'm doing by giving both versions for the uploaded articles.

As StickHead mentioned, this is time consuming work though! BTW, awesome work StickHead on your STF issues! - I found your site some time ago and already linked to it frmo my STF Links page :D It would be awesome to incorporate your issues 1-4 content into the STF website - if you're genuinly happy for me to do this?, I'll make it happen and credit/link you on each article I use.

On that note, if anyone else has an OCR'd article or review from STF, I'll happily stick it on the STF site and credit you.

Desty: re your query about scanning / OCR'ing / wrapping in HTML, I'd say the breakdown (time wise) is something like scanning:20%, OCR'ing:50%, HTML:30%. re: the HTMl, I've written an Access database and loads of Visual Basic code that generate me the entire HTML site at the click of a button - took a long time to write and get right, but all done now :D

PS. Mega Lo Mania game review is now on-line! as well as Falcon 030 vs Amiga article :D

Cheers,
Jez

I used ISSUU to do this on my website. See embedded and flippable magazine.

http://thebigconsultant.com/portfolio.html

Its easy and the instructions are here

http://issuu.com/

I personally, think OCR would be very time consuming, and I would prefer to see a joint effort to scan and document all the information. Then we are preserving it for our use and the future computing archaeologists and crazies.

Would be great to read any issue, page or item from ST Format online, and even download the disk. Some really great articles, games review, tutorials and history etc.

Its very very easy indeed. And I just uploaded the pics via web browser, and then it gives you an 'embd' code, in exactly the same way as embedding a Youtube video. You just paste the html into your website. Simples.

There are also other free oned like this too. I can think of Slideshare and Scribd

ISSUU does not exhibit this... cool.

Nice one!

On a side note, check out the ads on page 2/3... why are Robocop, Batman etc 25% more expensive for the Amiga than for the ST?

Hi,

I have done an example to show how easy it is to upload as a flip book and embed using Issuu

See here for example http://www.thebigconsultant.com/atari/example.html (it took less that 5 mins to cut and paste)

Steps@-
1. Create ISSUE login at http://issuu.com/
2 .I uploaded PFD file to ISSUU as PDF and it publishes automatically to its server
3. Cut and paste the HTML code for embedding into HTML editor (also has code for blogger, wordpress etc etc)

Could anyone answer my question about what needs scanning still? Is there a list? As I have quite a few issues, and also the ST Format "Wonderdisks". Cheers.

If there was a list, then perhaps we could tick them off on this thread, and work together to scan them in??

Nice work, but your example is missing page 38 ;) The system looks great though.

Go for it Jez! This kind of information needs to be preserved and made available for anyone (crazy enough :D ) to read.

As for the work load, it really was labour intensive - I found the HTML portion of the task a breeze thanks to a free notepad software I used, where I could just highlight and click to apply tags and styles to sections of text. The real chore was the scanning, which was tedious, but required concentration to get it right. The OCR software was pretty accurate, but reading each page for errors was a necessity as there would be one or two errors (I think this is due to the typeface used in the mag). Text on pictured or darkish backgrounds would be garbled or not picked up at all, so I would type those out by hand.

ISSUU looks great. A very intuitive interface - I can imagine reading through some magazines using that. The problem is when uploading them to the internet, you are technically breaching copyright, so it would only be a matter of time before somebody took them down. I wonder if there is a javascript or similar version that you could install on one's own site and store the magazines locally? An ST equivalent of the Amiga Magazine Rack would be amazing.

We definitely need to collaborate on this. Somebody, somewhere probably has a sizable collection of scanned magazines already (I'm looking at you, Mug! ;) ). I am personally reluctant to blindly scan my hundreds of magazines to later find that somebody has already gone to the trouble.

Whats the quickest way to scan to PDF, thats without OCR. I am quite happy to scan some mags in myself, but not the OCR as it I simply dont have time.

Could do with a proggy or a method to scan multiple pages to a document and then export to PDF. What is the quickest method??

Personally I think OCR is going to slow the job down. Its a great idea, but perhaps this can be done afterward?? Would it be better to get a team of people to say, scan in 5-10 magazines in each? Or even just one or two. Lets get a simple and quick method knocked on the head, with a simple method to compile to PDF.

I just looked at Amiga Magazine Rack. I think that we can do better than this. Besides, if they can put up Amiga Magazines, then I dont see why Atari ones cant be put on the net. They are 20 years old!!

There are other services like ISSUU. But its easy, and takes 5 mins to convert a PDF to a flippable embeddable magazine. I would be quite happy to risk having a PDDF download, and an ISSUU flipper for example. Plus then a link to Coverdisk and Wonderdisk. Personally speaking OCR is not required for me, I would only need html if I wanted to cut and paste, and I cant see why I need that. If someone can find a better idea than ISSUU I would like to see it, but might be harder to set up.

I have seen a lot of books and manuals on ISSUU, and it looks like a good place to archive old books, manuals and magazines for the future.
I wonder if there is a javascript or similar version that you could install on one's own site and store the magazines locally? An ST equivalent of the Amiga Magazine Rack would be amazing.
Just store the PDF on site locally. Simple. We can do better than Amiga Magazine Rack. Its just a load of games reviews, and also I dont like the interface, just loading up single page scans. Ugly and unintuative.

Anther advantage of ISSUU is that the magazines can be posted, blogged etc etc.

Here's an idea. Cut the spines of the ST Format magazines, and run them through a scanner with page feeder, like on one of those all in one printer/scanners. You know with auto page feed.

I still have no idea what wants scanning in??? Is there a list of what is done??? I think with a few people, we can collaborate on this. Its the only way to do it. I think a simple method to compile PDF from multi page scan needs posting and deciding on. I would certainly like to read through issues of ST Format that I dont own, and online is ideal. Lets do this!!

Absolutely - better to just get the raw scans done and online, than to take on the much bigger job with OCR and possibly burn out after only a few issues. Break down the job!

Good point. How about a page of what's scanned on the Wiki, with links to where they're currently hosted? That way, if/when things are taken down, we can just update the links, and if someone like me comes along in 6 months time (post uni/purgatory) with some scannable stuff, I could avoid duplication of effort by checking the list.
The methods and their pros/cons can be added there too, rather than having people trawl through the forum pages to figure out what to do.

I have never edited a wiki before, is it possible to embed files and host in the wiki itself?

I dont think it is a good idea, or easy to upload PDF's into the Wiki? Please someone tell me if I am write or wrong?

Clearly someone here is making an ST Format Site already, so perhaps it would be best to send them to that person, perhaps using the MegaUpload type sites as before.

If there is someone here who is doing the Wiki, they can then link to this. Wing, I think if you like the Wii, why cant the ST Format Sites links be added. There is at least 2 sites with ST Format info, and a guy here wanting to do a new one.

I think that the modus operendi is to get the magazines scanned in. I have some in the attic, but I am only willing to do some if other do as well, and I want to know what has been done already?

Great idea to put a progress list on the wiki, wongck, but we need to separate that table up into 'complete scans (pdf)' and 'HTML version' to make it really useful. Also a column called 'in progress' where people could put their names to tell others they plan to scan an issue would help avoid people doubling up. Also, lets not just limit it to STF; there are many super ST mags with lots of great content.

Then we would need a central hub where everyone could upload their .pdf files via ftp and proliferate them (proliferation is the best preservation  ). We can't do this on the wiki, as the bandwidth costs would be unfair to the decent folk who pay the hosting for this forum.

RE: OCRing and HTMLing mags on my old website: This was done so that they could be viewed on Atari machines connected to the internet. Crazy, I know, but they looked pretty sweet on a Falcon.

I just came across this site: http://www.retromags.com/forums/index.php?

They have some scans of STart magazine, which I believe is an American magazine. The scans aren't of exemplary quality, but readable.

A quick shufty through my hard drives has revealed complete .pdf collections of ACE magazine which I know has ST content. Bonus!

They also have STF #39! That saves a night's worth of scanning!

Yeah I downloaded a 4.10GB torrent full of the ACE magazine pdf files. Been wanting to get them back for years ever since I chucked my haul of mags in the bin during the 1990s. The quality of the scans is very good too.
