New 'retro' magazine.

Post by Shaun.Bebbington »

Many of you will know that Retro Gamer has sadly folded recently :-( but there are rumours that another company is going to buy it and effectively re-launch the title - this may or may not happen, but I'm working with a consortium of investors to launch an all-new printed retro gaming and computing magazine called 'RETRO:BYTES'. The plan is that there will be 8 issues a year (one every six weeks) and it should be on the shelves at the end of November + available on various online store.

If you're interested, there's a forum over at http://www.retro-trader.com/forum where you can ask any questions you like. There will be freelance opportunities, but please don't send me any of your work or ideas yet. Just email me expressing an interest (to retrocomtoday@aol.com) and I'll happily explain a bit more about the magazine and what I'm looking for in terms of writing etc...

All being well, I'll should be able to get down to the Jag Fest UK and talk to the punters there about it - time permitting of course!

Regards,

Shaun Bebbington.

So the Last Ninja one was the last one? Shame .. twas a damn good read when it existed. Learned a lot about machines I didn't know existed at the same time as my Atari ST.

I'm sure there are a few of us on here are budding enough journalists to lend you a hand with some articles etc.

Arse - I wondered why I hadnt seen a copy lately - which was the last edition then?

Last one I have is the 1st one with the green spine - issue featuring robocop.

To be honest I was considering stopping getting it - it ended up concentrating too much on the weird foreign consoles that I had never heard of instead of more mainstream stuff - weird is good but it ended up being all about the weird stuff. You would think that being a UK centric mag it would have been heavy on the Spectrum, C64, Atari ST and Amiga - but they only got 1 edition each.

Same here.. I didn't realise it had folded :(

RG was the only mag I bought :(

Suppose that's my subscription money down the drain.

Alright Atari folk,

For those who are interested, they can follow 'the making of R:B issue one' at http://www.retro-bytes.co.uk/editorslog.rtf and of course post comments on the official forum as mentioned in my previous post.

It's all looking good at the mo, though I'm completely busy as you can imagine, as I'm not only editing but trying to promote the mag as well to give it the best start that I can. If anyone would like to help spread the word (ie, if anyone is attending this year's JagFest UK etc...)

Regards,

Shaun.

Shaun,

Will the new magazine be available in Ireland through the standard distribution network. As most UK magazines go through Comag or Easons in Ireland via the UK I hope this is the case with RB from issue One.

Thanks,

Just updating y'all to the fact that I've uploaded a temporary website at http://www.retro-bytes.co.uk

There's a new masthead and three potential t-shirt designs that you can vote for on the web forum (probably mentioned above).

Many thanks,

Shaun.

Alright folks,

The mock cover is done (below). There will be some changes to it when the designer is back, but we're thinking about using a different cover image, maybe 'It Came From The Desert' would be more appropaite.

Comments, suggestions etc... all welcome!

Regards,

Shaun.

An update on Retro Gamer magazine for those interested...

I got a letter from Imagine Publishing yesterday, stating that they are taking over the publishing rights to Retro Gamer magazine and the next issue should be out in early December. Interestingly, Imagine used to publish Crash! and Zzap64 magazines so obviously have some pedigree in the computer magazine genre. Hopefully this will mean the production quality of RG magazine will be an improvement upon the issues released to date - great content and no offence to anyone involved in past RG issues but it was rife with typo's, grammatical errors, poor page layout... much like my posts!

Any other RG subscribers got the same letter?

Don't know if this is relevant to this thread or should have a thread of its own...

It was sad that Retro Gamer folded but maybe from the ashes Retro Bytes can rise and be even better! I wish you all the luck in the world with the venture!

That retrobytes title/logo is terrible - looks like it would be more at home on a packet of bubble gum.

Had a letter yesterday from a company taking over Retro Gamer. A new issue should be out very soon. They are even sending me some free issues due to me being a subscriber.

Just your opinion. Most people like the design and colour scheme, and personally I love contrasting colours; Kind of reminds me of the days of Your Sinclair and other such bright mags.
