Hi Goldrunner
These two games... Are not STE games..
Moonwalker, was made even before STe was born..
Suspicious Cargo, is also a ST game.. perhaps STE xtra is used. But I wouldnt be supriced if the Ste xtras isnt used in the game.

The list only represents what is in GamebaseST at the moment, it will not be complete until every game is in GamebaseST. I find Atari Legend's list incredably useful along with the Atar STE Fanpage for finding what is STE only or STE enhanced (sometimes its virtually impossible to tell). I also go through a games documenation when available and sometimes even a game boxscan will say. Even so, there is probably a few everyone has missed, probably only the STE Enhanced ones!

Brimey - its no surprise that the STE wasnt a "killer platform", there aint many games that call for one. Did atari pull the plug on the STFMs before they started selling STEs or were both concurrently in production? I assume after they killed the FMs forcing ST buying folk to buy STEs, its not like you got much more for your money tho.

Fire and Ice
One missing from the list. Fire and Ice is STe enhanced. The only difference is that there's a smother gradient on the sky in the background, but it's an STe enhancement, nonetheless.
It's also not listed as enhanced in the Atari Legend database.

Absolutely. I was a lowly STFM owner when I purchased the game... I took it round to a friend's house and immediately pointed at the sky and said "There are more colours, there!".ST Graveyard wrote:Are you sure about that? I've only played the game on an STe, but I never knew it was STe enhanced...
Then I bought an STe. (Although not for a few more colours in the Fire & Ice sky).

Re: Fire and Ice
It would be great to see pictures of the STFM and STE side-by-side for this and other enhanced games actually! Anyone done that... ?jamesrc wrote:One missing from the list. Keep, in mind.. some STE xtras may only be the sounds.. DMA used..
or Blitter, or Hardware scroll.. not always colour changes..
these things wont be noticed by pictures.. Where i also think i may missed some titles here and there who are STe Enchanted.. (while i tested and uploaded PD games..)
btw.. there is now 905 Downloads online at Atari Legend.. (PD/SW games)..

I just looked at some screenshots.Goldrunner wrote:I have just taken at look at Fire and Ice and it has very nice gradients for the sea and control panel but non for the sky, but it could still be a standard ST game with a very well chosen palette.
The sky itself is one block of colour unlike what Jamesrc suggests, was there another version made?
Yes, it's the sea gradient that I'm referring to.
It's enhanced on the STe.

I am inclined to agree that this game is STE enhanced since the sea is using 12 shades of blue all on its own, surely there is a bit too much colour in this game to be a standard ST game. Please see attached magnified screenshot of Fire and Ice:

The Amiga could display 32 colours on screen at once, or even 64 using half-brite mode. In addition the Amiga could use two screens at once, so giving the ability of 32 colours for say the play area (first screen) and a different 32 for the control panel (second screen).
Add to the above the graphics co-processor that could do fantastic copper effects (gradiant fills) using only one bitplane, even with the STE enhancements a properly coded Amiga game is always going to look better!

I love side by side comparisons, nice one Jamesrc that should settle the matter once and for all.
By the way, in my previous post it looks like I'm belittling the Atari ST against the Amiga which is not the case. I was just admitting the Amiga's edge with colour usage for games, and believe me it was hard writing that post

Hello James,
Well, you've got me convinced. Unbelievable. Too bad it wasn't enhanced more.
Gold, no worries ... To me, that is the difference between an ST and an AMI user. We can admit there is more powerfull hardware out there
(I have to watch what I say here).
... Then again, who said more powerfull was better, he
cheers,
Grave

i guess the blitter would definitely help here.. maybe the STe hardware scrolling would help as well, but that largely depends on the amount of sprite data to be displayed (with hw scroll you have to restore the background behind the sprites).
nice about the STe rasters.. seems a bit like what ZooL did as well (although i wonder if that game was a bit more enhanced?).
