Retro Gamer Issue 7

Hi all,

I just had to mention this :) Issue 7 of Retro Gamer magazine is out now and will start hitting newsagent shelves in the coming week. The cover feature is a large in-depth piece on the ST including the genre-redefining games, hardware history and more. There is also an interview with Darryl Still, the head honcho of Atari UK during the STs launch and success period.

If this sounds like a blatant plug for the magazine, well.. it is.. because I wrote the article :)

You wrote it? Congratulations! I bought issue 5 here in Belgium ... I ordered it, costed me 40 euro for it :-(

I hope to get 7 a bit cheaper!

Yeah I wrote it :) The original article was really long, some 12 pages.. I do not yet know how much they cut out :)

I hope you manage to find it cheaper! Perhaps on ebay or something :)

Look forward to reading ht article Rich... If you think they cut too much of it - maybe the original unedited version could appear at Atari Legend or of course your own site?

I was going to order this but... eh now I am wondering. :? How come it ended up at 40 euros? Must be one hell of thick magazine if the shipping cost is that high.

Usually has a DVD-case with a CD containing goodies. Got all the issues except for the rare Issue 1 which is used as a plug within the mag to subscribe as the prices on Ebay for Issue 1 are astronomical!

I bought it from the local import store ... bad idea ... had my mom bought it for me, else I left it... But she thought it was the normal price ...

I know what has been chopped out now - the feature on ST applications and also ST emulators. But they kept the rest which is really cool. I will ask them today what kind of rights I have regarding releasing the original piece.

Hopefully the outcome is good Rich. If anything they should realise this is excellent publicity for them.

From what I've heared anyway they're a good bunch of people at the magazine so fingers crossed. Be nice to read the full version - afterall the ST had a large place in the Applications scene what with the Music side of things and quite a bit of DTP from what I recall...

Issue 7 is out in the wild :-)

Much respect for a great article mate!

I've got one or two suggestions which I'm
poking in the Retrogamer file, but too early
to tell if anything will come of them ;-)

Keep up the good work Ravey Gravey Davy, let's
see if we can think of other ways to keep
the Atari name in the Retro Gamer pages!

Amusing how they have pages of praise for our awesome machine, then spend time in the Sega Outrun/Afterburner section slagging the machine off.

True.. but I didn't write those pieces :)

And in all fairness, both the Outrun and Afterburner conversions WERE pants!

Or more specifically, most US Gold game conversions were rubbish :)

Conversions generally weren't too bad, the Turrican series for example :)

I remember being @ the Atari Show @ Ally Pally when Outrun was released .. saw it running, then rung a mate to ask him if he *really* wanted me to buy it for him as it was crap. Bought it in the end for him (well, he said it was for his 4 year old to play - yeah right!) and a few days later he admitted I was right.

When you look at most Probe conversions, the 16-bit ones were literally the Speccy versions tarted up with better graphics. The sounds weren't really an improvement on the Speccy 128K versions - especially if they were David Whittaker tunes.

There is one composer who should stick to sloooow tunes as his driver works well .. but "action" tunes, just sound awful. Maybe that's just me.

As far as Outrun, Space Harrier & their ilk goes, the original arcade versions were always the best of the bunch. Whether played using MAME or on the original machines (assuming there are still working machines around :) ) the arcade versions were always better than the conversions.

I don't recall who converted Super Hang-On to the ST but IMO that was a job well done.

Atari Falcon x 4 (including a broken one that I need to get fixed), Atari Mega STe (4mb, TOS 2.05), Atari STe (1mb), Atari Mega ST (2mb) with SC1435 color monitor, Atari 4160 STe (4mb, TOS 1.62), Atari STFM (2.5mb), Atari 800xl with Ultimate 1mb upgrade and SIO2SD (a fantastic upgrade, definitely worth it).

Ah, that would be ZZKJ of Your Sinclair's "Hacking Away"... Its funny how
hackers become the best programmers!

In the Falcon part of the retrogamer site, I haven't seen any review of Beats of rage ;)
