Hatari 2.4 has been released

Post by npomarede »

Hello

In time for the summer holidays, Hatari 2.4.0 has been released !

You can get it from https://hatari.tuxfamily.org/ or directly in https://download.tuxfamily.org/hatari/2.4.0/

Sources are available, as well as prebuilt binaries for Windows (in 32 bit and 64 bit mode) and macOS (thanks to Troed).
(note that the Windows binaries don't include PortAudio/PortMidi libraries for now, only macOS version does)

Major highlights of this new version :

- Major rewrite of the internal delays/timers, speed up emulation by ~10% on average
- Various CPU improvements (FPU, IPL timing)
- Faster CPU emulation for 68000 in cycle exact mode (speed up emulation by ~7%)
- More accurate MFP emulation, combined with the new internal timers
- Improved VBLANK position in 50 and 60 Hz mode
- Improved cycle accurate YM2149 emulation, supporting new effects (syncsquare in maxYMiser v1.53)
- Better value for MFP GPIP bit 7 (STE DMA sound and Falcon sound)
- For SCSI, improve "Mode Sense" and "Report Luns"
- For IKDB, better emulation of commands $A and $B
- Better MIDI using PortMidi (Linux/Windows/macOS)
- Better RS232 support for BSD/macOS
- Some fixes for Gemdos HD mode
- Many debugger improvements
- Hatari now defaults to the SMALL_MEM build option, using less RAM during emulation

See release-notes.txt for the full changelog http://hatari.tuxfamily.org/doc/release-notes.txt

No new intro this time, maybe for the next release :)

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who worked so hard on this! I discovered Hatari a couple of years ago (you could say that it is my lockdown hobby) and it has been fantastic using it to get back into some of the games and applications that I used to use on my ST when I was younger. I'm looking forward to trying 2.4 :-)

Nice! That's quite a big list of improvements and I'm especially happy that the debugger gets so much love :)
Great work and thank you to all of you who are involved with Hatari!

Thanks for the new release - I have to say the increase in performance is clearly noticable, nice work!

But I might have detected a possible regression in there too:

On my setup there does seem to be some new kind of gfx problem where the first 8 pixels on the left and the last 8 pixels to the right are sort of mashed together. I am using an extended VDI screen with 1280x960 at 16 colours. This mode did seem ok on Hatari 2.3.1 btw.

Ah the 32bits Windows build isn't compatible with XP anymore (GetTickCount64 missing).

I tested with Windows 10 and it worked ; there's not much I can do about Windows XP support, I'm afraid this OS is deprecated (but maybe some other users here would like to maintain a Windows XP port ?)

Refuses to run on my machine as well. Must of dropped macOS High Sierra support as well on the mac. However, my machine is going on 12 years old, not really a shock. Will be replacing it in the near future. Thanks for the release.

Congratulations Hatari team! I can only emphasize that this is the same I feel.

And not to mention, i think Hatari has its 20th anniversary, either already in the past or soon.
I used it as my go-to- ST emulator since then and it jumped in the last 10-15 years to become really great!

What precisely happens when you try to run it?

And are you able to run it from the Mac terminal with debug logging turned on? Something like this:

Code: Select all

/Applications/Hatari.app/Contents/MacOS/hatari --log-level debug
(Note: the path might be different if you have installed it in a different location to me.)

Veering off topic but a 12 year old Mac can be persuaded to run newer os versions. My 10 year old one is on Monterey.

Going back on topic, the homebrew build has a pull request on GitHub with a small build error waiting to be fixed.
