Some converted NEOchrome Master "raster" images

Post by Anima »

I guess there are not many NEOchrome Master raster images, right? Well, here are some converted raster images which can be loaded into NEOchrome Master.

The Retro Image Tool, which has been used to convert the pictures, is written in JavaScript and runs in a browser. Please be careful because it's in an experimental stage and it can slow down your PC and still has some nasty bugs!

Here's a short description how to convert images to the NEOchrome Master raster format (please use Google Chrome for the best result):

First resize your picture to 320 x 200 pixels (any 16:10 aspect ratio source is perfect) with a graphics tool of your choice. Then use drag and drop to move the resized image file into the tool website area. On the very first start the picture will be shown as a 16 colours image.

Be careful: the next step is very time and resource demanding so check if your PC is fast enough. Click on "16" next to "colours" and choose "16 (PCHG)" from the selector to convert the original picture to a "palette changed" image. After the conversion click "save" to name and save the image as an NEOchrome Master compatible IFF image.

Please note that any additional dropped picture file will be converted to "16 (PCHG)" automatically as long as the colour selection isn't changed to a different option.

All NEOchrome Master raster images (IFF) can be found in this archive #1 and archive #2.

All of the above.

It's late, I'm being thick, but are these the end result displaying on native Atari hardware, and what are we using to display them if that is the case?

Indeed nice. Thanks for the sample files. I am updating my IFF codec for zView to handle these.

Yes, the previews show the result on the Atari STE. You can use NEOchrome Master to load and display them. I am not aware of any slideshow software though.

Great! I only tested them under Hatari and the only document I found was this one so I hope the files are valid.

That's the only information I could find as well. I think according to the IFF specifications they are slightly incorrect, because the RASTer chunk should appear before the bitmap data. However, we are stuck with this arrangement as NEOchrome Master creates them this way. ;)

I had to tweak my IFF chunk reader. It seems to work quite ok on all the samples and the above snapshot is zView running in 256 colors. Perhaps might look even better in TC if zView doesn't have to dither.

Fair enough. I thought perhaps NEO Master would be the best option, immediately after posting late last night.

But if Lonny has been busy with zView, that's got to be a good thing too. :D

The updated codec can be found here in folder \zview_codecs\purec\
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/hk65mapqd3fm ... KqQTa?dl=0
It also requires IFF.PRG in the same dir as the codec. ;)

Yes, only 16 colours per line are supported by NEOchrome Master. So there are better solutions out there for the Atari. ;)

These look stunning on my MegaSTE. Funny how a pic of a small town in NZ wound up on there. :-) Nice.

Falcon high-color test. Definitely look better, about as good as the png conversions.

It is written in JavaScript and already online but it's currently under heavy development so I'll post the link later on. ;)

Sorry about this. Now it should work again.

Edit: also I would recommend to use Chrome or Microsoft Edge for the time being since Firefox has memory problems. Yeah, I am about to fix that. :D

Second edit: "save" works again in Firefox...

great works now ok. thanks

Would be possible to add 4 (PCHNG) mode? It would be cool to see some hi-color graphics in ST-Med resolution.

Yes, it's online.

Of course you should use images with a resolution of 640 x 200 pixels do get the right result. Note that the picture aspect ratio in the online tool is being corrected for this particular image size like it is being displayed on the Atari.

Beware: with only four colours the quality of the resulting images depends heavily on the content.

To test it please download this picture:

For a better view here's the source picture with the correct aspect ratio followed by the resulting image:

great.
What does "Colours" checkbox stand for ?

One more bug found. In FF when processing image is done we can still see message "Processing... 70%"
