STE V1.5 16MHz BOOSTER "BETA"

Post by exxos »

Now and then I get asked about "STE boosters" Well I had a few hours spare so decided to mash in the V1.5 booster into one of my STE's to see how it went.. It does fit and it does work :) I've been taking images as I went along, so hope to do a guide to it when I get time. So probably in the new year there will be a method to install the V1.5 booster in the STE :)

While I normally "remove" the CPU and do it that way for neatness, this would cause problems with any other hardware mods which plug in over the CPU. So I "hard wired" the V1.5 booster onto the motherboard as not to limit other upgrades.

I've taken screenshots of the 16mhz with and without blitter. CPU has the 16mhz boost and ROM has the 16mhz boost also. The results are a few percent faster than the STFM, though that could be down to my STE has TOS206. So assume some routines were improved a fraction over TOS104.

Curious to know if this would work okay with AlanH's Monster board?
STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

I've ordered the STFM kit from him to try out today in fact. Shouldn't be any reason why it wouldn't work.

Those figures look really good Chris. The 16MHz to the EPROM - does that require pin 22 to be lifted? It's hard to see if the pin has been cut or is still there but masked by the soldering.

How would the rom boost patch into AlanH's flash rom? I have his STFM/MEGA MonSTer boards and discovered my ADSpeed booster software clock switcher registers are slap bang in Atari's IDE registers so it puts the kibosh on the IDE part of the MonSTer board. Your speeder looks like it is giving the ADSpeed a run for it's money by boosting the ROM and no registers to worry about.

Time to visit your web store again ;-)
TT030 10mb/16mb/1Gb, Coco. Falcon 030 Stock 14mb (Lynxman), 1Gb CF. Falcon 030 Stock 14mb (Atari) 170mb IDE. The STE operates ROM as normal, the pin 22 wire is CE, that line is used to switch the CPU into 16mhz mode. I have no idea how alan's stuff works, though if he has a CE on there and decoding ROM, then that would be the signal to use to feed into the CE pin on the booster. So it would give 16mhz access to flash ROM. Though the ROM has to be 100ns or faster to work. You'd have to ask alan about the technicals. Worst case is just connect CE to VCC to disable the fast-rom access.

I will do a guide on how to install the booster, but its going to take a few days I still need to do some long term testing to make sure its stable before I actually start selling it. Most probably I will use the DIP based board as I then can do firmware updates if needed. The STM chips I had to get programmed by a 3rd party, so its not easy to do any updates to those. Though really there shouldn't be any issues anyway.

Interesting. I could make some use of that until you finish 68020 booster.

I've still got it on test on my STE at the moment. I've taken images to fit it, though it needs some track cutting, so not so simple to fit. I'm in 2 minds if to actually "release" the mod with the V1.5 currently. It will be much lower cost the Rodolphe 020 board, but the 020 will be a lot faster.

Currently I have been running the STE mod at 32mhz. Results are with and without blitter enabled. The CPU and ROM's are working at 32mhz.

NIce. Is it pretty stable at 32MHz?

Not had any issues with stability so far. I'm using the machine for testing all sorts out, hardware and software.

The only issue I sometimes get is on power on the Fuji ends up with a ghost in yellow. I think it could be some power up reset issue though with the STE itself. I need to look into more at some point. Though it rarely happens.

Normally my monitor comes on then few second wait before floppy access (8mhz), though mostly (at 32mhz) its accessing the floppy before the monitor even turns on. So could just need a higher value capacitor in the reset circuit to solve it.

This work is actually obsolete.. It was just proof of concept not a actual production board.

Current work is here.
