Can anyone tell me what the status is on the software for writing Pasti images? Is it unfinished, or some kind of closely guarded secret?
I have a big crate of original game diskettes that I would like to archive, cannot benefit from this labor if I can't write them back to diskette if needed. I personally am not interested in running under emulation since I have several Atari computers.
I do have a Happy Discovery Cartridge, which is mentioned as being capable of writing Pasti images.

just out of curiosity, can you list the original games you have?
For preservation and copy-protected disks using pasti is the number one method. I know of no write-back software, maybe you should ask ijor directly.
I think I've read somewhere that is is possible to write back using a catweasle. About the discovery I don't know.
About the dumping process: Sometimes msa doesn't work when pasti works. I'm wondering if it would be best to first dump in pasti and then convert it to msa.
This way you have both, good preservation and 1:1 copies for playing them on your machines.
What you could do, is using one of ppera's HDD enabled games and just put them on your HDD

or use a flash drive floppy emulator with pasti images.
But before you waste a lot of time imaging everything you have, just visit http://www.atarimania.com . And when you found some of your treasures there, it would be fantastic if you gave something back i.e. dump one or two games they don't have yet or scan a box,a disk or a manual they don't have. Every bit helps and every scan/dump people here can do helps saving money for getting another game.

I probably have 200 original game disks and manuals/codewheels inherited from other users and the last Atari store here. I don't have them cataloged to provide a list, nor have I compared them to the list of games already imaged, but as they are old and getting older, I would like to preserve them. My goal is to get all of my 600+ floppy disks (400 are data, downloads, and all kinds of other stuff) onto a raided server, and then backed up to DVD-R, including all of the protected games if possible.
From what I had read, it was supposed to be possible to write Pasti images back to disk using a Catweasle or a Happy Discovery Cartridge, but it is not clear if this was achieved or something that is planned for the future. I am interested in some way to use Pasti images on an Atari computer.
Regarding conversion of Pasti images to MSA, it is my understanding that MSA cannot retain the information needed for the copy protection methods used for many of these disks. I plan to use MSA for my unprotected data disks, because I can mount these using DIMFILE or JAYMSA to use on an Atari computer, but to my knowledge the only formats that can keep the copy protection information are the Happy Discovery format (requires hardware) and Pasti. The Happy format can only be used by the Happy software to write out to diskettes again, and it seems the Pasti format may currently only be useable in Steem.
I am interested in the HDD enabled collection you mentioned, and will be looking into that since running from the hard disk would make any of these games more enjoyable.
As an alternative to Pasti writing software for an Atari computer, perhaps some goals could be to be able to use Pasti images with a program such as Image Runner, and with an HxC floppy emulator. I suppose that I would be happy to put these diskettes away forever (and never write out another one again), or donate them to an Atari museum, if I could still use images of a few of my favorite games on one of my Atari systems.
