Pasti on Mac OS X

Post by Marakatti »

It's a well known "problem" that there has been no pasti-compatible emulator for Mac users. Just found a temporary solution.
A nice program called Macindows is able to run some Windows-programs without Windows itself. I guess it's some sort of shell for Wine. Anyway, it seems to run Steem nicely (if a bit slow without auto frame skip). Just tried it with pasti.dll and couple of images and it runs surprisingly well :)

It's just a demo and expires after 30 days, but still it's a nice start. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/33366/macindows

I also tried free program WineBottler ( http://mike.kronenberg.org/ ), but haven't got it working well enough with Steem. Maybe someone with more experience can help to build a working prefix for Steem?

Ofcourse the best thing would have Pasti-support for Hatari, but for now there at least seems to be one way to run STX on OSX.

Hi, I've only recently "returned" to the Atari ST. Having sold my hardware long ago I'm not using Hatari and NoSTalgia also on my iMac - I recently came across some .stx files and couldn't figure out what was going on. I thought there was only .MSA and .ST out there lol. Good post this with nice ideas also although I do agree that having Hatari directly support .stx would be cool.

Keeping my fingers crossed :D

btw, http://www.atarimania.com rocks!!
thanks, Steve.

I have Steem 3.6.3 running on OS X. The key is to use a Wine shell that allows you to select the Wine engine version that you want to run. I have found that Wine 1.3.25 works fine with Steem. I use Wineskin (another free OS X Wine shell). If you pick a later Wine version (1.4 or later), the Wine project took out some graphic hacks that may help many other programs but break programs like Steem.

My preferred paid Wine option is Codeweavers' CrossOver Mac product. I know they support the Wine project financially. Unfortunately, I cannot choose my Wine engine version in CrossOver so I fall back to Wineskin (http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com) when I have a Windows program that needs a specific version of Wine. I like Winebottler's interface better, but it hasn't been worth it to install another free Wine shell.

I just played Lethal Xcess in Steem turning auto frame skip off. I used display every frame and it seemed fine to me. However, I am running a late 2013 iMac (2.7 Ghz Core i5 with Intel Iris Pro integrated graphics).

I would not give up on Hatari gaining pasti support. As an OS X user, that is my preferred ST emulator (sorry, Steven).

Hatari 1.8 will have STX support :)
All tested images (>100) worked fine and it should be released in a few weeks hopefully.

Nicolas,

Thank you for answering. I would be happy to do any pasti testing once your changes are committed to dev.

But you need Steem to do the ultimate:
-run OSX Apple
-run Wine (Windows emulator)
-run Steem (Atari ST emulator)
-run Aladin (Macintosh emulator)
-maybe run the Apple II emulator?
In the CIA we learned that ST ruled
