ST Format- Autumn '89

To celebrate the return of the forums (a convenient excuse for me only now getting around to it) I give to you all the Autumn 1989 edition of ST Format (effectively issue #0) in CBR format! This came with my raffle-won (in other words old stock) 520ST and I've never seen it or heard mention of it anywhere else ever; check out that front cover!

Image

Download the 100MB or so file from here and you may need to read about Comic book archives here in order to read the magazine.
[EDIT] If the above link does not work use this one instead but please use this ONLY as a last resort!

This was of course 20 years old a few months back but it takes a fair amount of time to scan, arrange and upload things (as others who've scanned in mags will all too much know); stay tuned for when I finally get around to taking receivership my Atari Falcon from the Atari labs (USA) liquidated stock which apparently has Jaguar CD emulation code on its hard-drive (I bought that like about ten years ago but couldn't have it delivered at the time)!! *ehhh...*

Big thanks, absolutely a fantastic start for this day :)

No need for the Comic book archive on Mac at least, the Unarchiver depacked it nicely.

Your Falcon sounds quite interesting, I wonder what kind of software treasures there were in the machines that came from Atari Labs.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
I made it as a comic book archive simply because the software used to view such files can show two pages side by side (there are a few double spreads which can only be seen as intended this way); the file itself is just a RAR archive which is why the files contained within are easy to extract. The magazine is larger than my scanner's plate so that's why some pages have bits cut off the bottom and appear as separate images.

.CBR (or .CBZ) format can be opened up by just renaming it to .RAR (or .ZIP accordingly) and inside will be the pictures :)

I've uploaded the file to my Untergrund account for those who are having trouble with MegaUpload (see my first post). I was reluctant to use Untergrund as it's only meant for Demoscene stuff but I don't have any other hosting available. Please don't use it if you can use MegaUpload as Untergrund is a free service to aid sceners who need somewhere to host their work and so shouldn't be exploited.

Cheers spiny, very much appreciated; the more places to get files the better.

A bit moot now, but FYI there is a very useful program I use called jDownloader which automatically deals with annoying dodgy download sites like Megaupload/Rapidshare etc. Check it out next time you're frustrated by a Megaupload link :P

I use jDownloader too and love it. The download container files often stop working and you have to wait until an update comes along, but most of the time it does not matter as I use standard web URLs. Before this program I used USDownloader all the time; I still use it for the odd stubborn download that jDownloader fails with.

Thanks for putting it up, I really (still) enjoy reading issues of ST Format and it's awesome to see one of the first issues. :)

Well worth downloading a comic reader for....

I asked Future and they said it is illegal to distribute scans of ST Format.

I was planning on doing my whole collection for www.atarimagazines.com

I doubt Future will be bothered about me sharing this one, it was a promotional issue that was free with my machine after all.
Thanks for the kind words of thanks from you all by the way, it means a lot to me. :D

Oh, I didn't know it. Thanks for highlight it.

I wonder why. It's an old magazine that you cannot get anymore from the original publisher :(

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your e-mail,

I’m afraid the © in the magazines still exists and although Future as a company would not object, we can not allow it. This is because many features and illustrations/photographs etc will have been done or supplied to us from various people and Companies and we can not guarantee that we have the right to license the work to appear on a website. (Future doesn’t always own © for everything in the magazines published) Certain things are supplied to us on a one time use base for publication in the magazine only. We could end up getting in to some people’s bad books if we allow the magazine to be downloaded from a third party website.
So I’m sorry about that but I really appreciate you asking our permission first.

Many Thanks,

Polly

Thanks matt

What I understand is that is not Future who would complain but the owners of that maybe copyrighted material, for example some pictures. Which makes me remember that a friend told that he have received a complaint from a company that claims my friend is using copyrighted images in his website, even when that company is not the owner of the images.

Anyway, let's don't tempt fate, but if somebody have scanned ST Format... please send to me. I would love to have it

Indeed, I have done it and then uncompressed the ZIP file, which creates a folder full of jpeg. Then selected all the jpeg and printed with PrimoPDF (the Free PDF creator).

You get a nice PDF of only 37MB, instead of the 116Mb of the CBR.
