Falcon vs. Jaguar - Hardware

Post by nativ »

Hello all!

I've posted this before. . . I think. . . has anyone ever connected a Jaguar up to a Falcon via the DSP link?
Make an interesting add on! Thats for sure!!!
Are there any good sources of info for the Jaguar DSP port?

Thanks

Ashley

Without being too familiar with the DSP port on the jaguar, I somehow fail to see the point.
There are (much) better ways to improve a falcon, imho.

Hello,
Both ways on this, using the Falcons hard ware Cd etc. to run software from. Or using it to add 2 more Dsp's and a 68000!
I'm sure Whip might go mad!

I'm sure there are more things. .

and a Jag/Falcon/CT60(+ez80!) combo would be completly unstoppable!
ha ha haa!

Where's my sticky tape?

Thanks

Didn't Atari give Falcons (as an option) away as the development platform for the Jaguar?

How they connected together?!!??!

I remember seeing one up for sale on Ebay a while back. It was a cartridge for the Falcon that had a lead on it and went to a Cartridge to the Jag. I don't remember the DSP being used but I could be wrong!

Hi,
Suggested the dsp port as it's common to both machines, and seems an obvious way to connect them. There's the 'Alpine dev. card' not sure how thats connected or whether it was platform specific.
Maybe there is some devopement software somewhere?
Maybe Jag games on theFalcon! woo!

Thanks

Ha ha, impossible.

Anyway, try searching the forums at atariage.com. There have been many discussions about the Jaguar dev systems there.

Hi,
Jag games on the Falcon why not?
Some of the less intensive software must be easy to directly port? Worms for example!
Were the PC Atari releases of Tempest etc requiring extra hardware? Was there a Jag card for the PC ?

PCs at the time had way more CPU than the Jag and Falcon. This CPU power could compensate for lack of the other custom chips. Some Jag games use mostly the Motorola CPU, so that code would port easily to Jaguar, but the other two RISC CPUs are much to powerful I think. It's probably possible in some rare cases but why? And who would do it? Why not play the Jag games on the Jag where they're intended?

Alrighty!

68000 + 2 DSP
vs.
68030 + 1 DSP, Ym3149? and Blitter + Cache.

Surely Wolf TSCC 3D proves to a certain extent that hardwares not an issue, if i'm correct it doesn't use the DSP even!

There must be a point to all this. . .

Really just digging for combined knowledge because of hardware connection.

I just want to make some softwares!!!!

Inshape and Chagall haven't had freeware releases have they? or the DA suite?

Thanks

These aren't really accurate comparisons because you aren't taking into consideration the power or bit-level of these chips.

Besides, the Wolf3D port for Atari Jaguar didn't use anything other than the 68k mostly according to the programmers. The same was said about DooM for Jaguar.

Certainly right there!
accurate comparison!!
pah!
Is it or is it not possible to 'patch' these 68000 Jaguar titles for the St? Falcon etc.?
Just for fun!
Suppose I best get some of these ROm dumps? And have a look!
Is the Debugger from Steem able to run on a real ST? I keep reading it's better than the others available?

Cowabunga Dude

I'm afraid reality isn't that simple. You can't compare the Jag hardware to that of the Falcon. The only common ground is the CPU (well, not really since the falcon use a 030). Also, if you need more power, there are much better optiones (e.g. the CT60).
I just want to make some softwares!!!!
Good idea :) But - no offence - "porting" Jag stuff is not a viable option. Try looking forward instead of backward!

Sorry for the bashing. Actually... some dude experimented with running TOS on the Jag. The memory map is kind of compatible, iirc. This project never took off, and I suspect that it wouldn't be a very fast general purpose computer anyway.

No Worries,

Are there any links for this Jaguar/TOS Project?

Thanks,

Where does the Aranym project stand on incorporating Jaguar emulation techniques?
