I know what a raycaster is, I have writen one myself on PC some years ago, but I don't think Substation or Destruction Imminent uses it (Ok maybe they use it to get data for the room so they don't need any 3d calculations, but not for the texturemapping). Wolfenstein on ST uses it, but it needs a c2p conversion to and you get 160x100 resolution if you want to have some frame rate. Substation and Destruction Imminent is 320x200 and faster than Wolf3d so they can't use texturemapping in the same way as wolf3d, so they must be doing it in ordinary bitmap mode and then you can't have a real texturemapper, so it must be some trick.

Hmm, does Substation work on an ST? For some odd reason I was thinking it was an
STe only game - prob wrong though. (or maybe it was enhanced for the STe?)...

I think Substation is for STE only. It has digital music in the menus anyway.

What version is this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0pDN4dP ... re=related

This looks like a real playable version with enemies. The best I found was doom081, but that one didn't had any moving enemies. From the look of the video it's very slow. Even slower than the versions I tested on Falcon and a 32MHz TT should do it better I think.

As the description says, it's Patrice Mandin's port.

Yea, I saw that now

I saw on his website that the sourcecode was there to. Then it would be possible to check it and maybe do some improvements (if it's possible). I don't have a GZ packer installed so couldn't check the files right away. Had been interesting to see if he used a c2p technic or only bitplane mode. From the speed on the TT video, it looks like it's all in bitplane mode.

I tested pm-doom on my TT and it was a more complete game than the other versions I tried, but so slow! It was maybe 1fps at best and it didn't matter if I used low or high detail or turned off floors/ceiling or even used the smallest window size. The speed was more or less the same, so there must be some fundamental error on the drawing code. Other than that, it looked ok:P

I got the source code and looked at it alittle and I can't find any "chunky2planar" routine in there and the drawing routine is complex with alots of rolls and stuff so without looking into exactly how it works I would say that it draws the bitplanes direct and that's why the speed is so low. Tobad since it's a rather complete game.

Substation definitely is an STE only game.

Well I can´t believe that pmddom is such slow on TT... I definately had it running at playable speed and in a playable size on my 25 MHz Falcon with 14 MB RAM. This was version 0.32 of pmdoom, year must have been around 2003. (Btw, the first scummVM version also ran on this machine, around the same time, even with speech from cd... little slow but still a burner!)

If you look at "Running", I think Doom *might* be possible at playable speed on a plain falcon, but never ever on ST. Sure if you reprogram it in 16 colors or less (like the speccy or c64 version) you could get it running, but I think we already have better alternatives...

Look for yerzmyey's videos on YouTube - he's a member on here too but he's also a Speccy fan (normal & the turbo-charged variants out there).

He includes a recording of a small test program to prove it's running on a 'normal' Speccy 128K at the start of both videos.

Must download these for my Spectrum 128K +2a and run them through the Compact Flash Card at some point.

That's interesting.

I didn't know that "Substation" works also on Falcon. Do You have any HDD version or must it work from diskette?

Ah, one more thing - "Des Lasers & Des Hommes" - I haven't seen this game before. Is it for ST or F030? I'd like to see that if it's anywhere on the Net. Any links maybe?
