Hey

I was wondering if anyone still had the PDF 'every page scanned' versions of The ONE ST magazines? I'm pretty sure I downloaded them as PDFs together not from AMR (which has pages missing anyway)

Thanks

*Bump* .. Having moved flats, the two extra heavy boxes of magazines were lugged up two flights of stairs.

I'm assuming the original person who wanted then is no longer interested in them for scanning, so does anyone else want them?

They are *heavy* so pick-up only or arrange for a courier to collect

Its kinda reminded me that my Girlfriend was kind enough to scan all the Atari world and another one I forgot name of. Plus a lot of manual scans. Its on my to do list to dig out my STF mags and scan each one of those too.

Nice one SK. If I find any more during the unpack, I'll include those too.

What size scanner do you have? I have 43,44,46,58,64 - do you or if you can scan them would you like them sent to you?

Was wondering if anyone knew how many issues the Atari World magazine had in its run? I heard somewhere it didn't even last 1 year?

I have all scans of "Atari world" and "Atari Computing". Plus a lot of manual scans. Though I have not yet had chance to do much else. Problem being it took 2 months sold work to scan the 2 mags and edit/crop them etc.

There was some dispute over STF scans, basically it sounds like someone scanned STF and then someone else took credit for them ?, due to myself being ripped off too many times with things like that, I watermarked the bottom of all the pages , however nobody was interested in hosting them, due to the water marks. As it got "too complicated" and time consuming to give stuff away, I have not yet had motivation to start STF scans. Its on my to do list, but it depends on interest in current scans. All the scans I have done are high-res and good quality scans. I hope to put them onto DVDs at some point in the future. They will no doubt fall under "beer ware" to obtain a copy.

How much space is needed to host the scans Exxos?

AC is 7GB, AW is about 16GB. Though with compression and some resolution reductions it can be made smaller.. Though seems a bit pointless doing high-res scans just to reduce the quality :?

I fear the thought of STF scans, early issues were hitting 100 pages, so at full resolution they could be pushing around 5GB a issue.

AC and AW? Wow, please release those, that would be amazing. Why not put them on usenet?

I will have put them on dvd for people, I don't have access to usenet, even so, it would take an age to upload them all. Will try and sort it out ASAP.

I would be happy to upload them to my host. Let us test their claim of 'unlimited' storage and bandwidth, shall we? :D

Have you contacted Atarimania? They would probably host them too.

:) I think it was last year when I contacted AM and others, it was some time ago, but basically if anything was water marked, they didn't want it, no matter how small the mark was. Mine are just a small note on the bottom of the page where the page numbers are kinda thing, not exactly "spoiling them" IMHO. I could probably upload a couple issues each week onto my webspace and let people download and re-host them on a more permanent server, that maybe the way to go. Will try and sort it out soon :)

It would be quicker to send me a DVD with them on, that way I could just FTP them all up in one go and Bob's your third cousin twice removed. I would be happy to pay for the postage, DVD and aforementioned beer money. ;)

I can see why AM would want unspoiled scans, but I can also see why you want credit for your hard (tedious?) work. As far as I see it, the more people that have this information on their hard drives, clouds, whatever, then the more likely it is to be preserved.

I agree. I have no problem with a small watermark if that is what you want to do. Also would be happy to send along some beer money :)

Good stuff  I will double check all the scans, there's over 2,000 pages so please bare with me :)

There are around 10MB to 20MB per page, each page around 2400 x 3500px on my monitor they are reduced to 25%, so I think that is what they will be released as.

I was trying compression, but I can tell at even 1% it messes up some quality. Will try and get them all as small as possible without loosing any quality, its gonna take several dvds otherwise.

The watermarking question is an interesting one and one with which I grappled when starting the scanning of my STF's recently. I can see both points of view.

Like exxos, I've spent a considerable amount of time scanning mags for http://www.stformat.com and like exxos, I am reluctant to publish these without a watermark for the reasons already discussed - it's too easy for someone who hasn't spent days of own their time from passing the work off as their own.

In reality, it's difficult to guess how likely this actually is though! I mean, who could really be bothered and to what end? I'll stick with watermarking for now but may reconsider a bit further down the road.

I do not see a problem with a small watermark personally, I would say if it was a huge banner watermark across the page then i wouldn't like it, though anyone who is really that bothered can just go and buy the real mags cheap anyway.

Years ago I had to add watermarks to every manual that I scanned and uploaded to the ReplacementDocs website. It was a small, unobtrusive logo which appeared on the front page only.

It didn't affect the PDF and acted more as a "you can get more from us" tag than anything else.
