Play YM files on Atari ST
Hi there.
SAP is a format of XL/XE's music emulated on PC.
It's possible to play SAP files back on Atari XL/XE.
Hence my question: is there any YM files player for Atari ST?
Regards,
Yerz

Maybe it's because it doesn't like taking .ym files directly. Compatible music files tend to come with .snd extension. They are called SNDH files.Hmmm, I tried to load some YM files on it but it crashes. Sad
Maybe it's because I use an emulator?
Here's another useful url, takes you to the sounds archive. Which also has players for most platforms as well as ST, loads of tools, and probably anything else you need to know.

Yes, exactly. It's the same format, the difference is that such an YM song has been made on this or that machine.CiH wrote:Aaah, you're talking about playing Speccy ym's I guess. I'm not an expert in that area, but I'm pretty sure the sndh archive includes these, and Amstrad ym's as well, so there must be a method of converting them?
Anyway, best of luck.
I've heard that it's possible to play YMs on real Atari. And - on the other hand - many of Spectrums have YM chip instead of AY. And we use YM format very often. That's why it should sound at least good (if not perfect). But maybe I'm wrong. Hmm. I wanted to test it anyway.
Sadly the newest AY-PLAYER has no possibility to save files as SNDH which is strange. That's why I'm looking for another way.

The Spectrum YM tracker by Vortex can save off the Spectrum-based files it can open as SNDH files. It can't open YM files though but it will at least allow you convert the Spectrum tunes into SNDH format.
Runs on Windows though .. don't know if you're like CiH and have a Mac instead.

I know a little while ago, Gunstick of ULM was on the Coding forum here discussing the best way to replay YM files on real STs - after all, the format is (mostly) a dump of the YM chips data registers. By blatting this data back through the registers, theoretically it should replay the tune.
My suggestion would be to drop a note to Leonard, creator of the YM-Sound program for PC. His website can be found at http://leonard.oxg.free.fr or you could leave him a private message here on Atari Forum.
Incidentally, his PC based YM-Player is now open source, which may help.

The only downside is that the ST replayer would have to unpack the data (large files) before replaying them.
The longer the tune - the larger the memory hog needed. Hence why SNDH is a better option for playing ST tunes on an ST

Sound Machine by Strider/MJJProd can replay .YM files (not sure if it can handle all .YM types though).

Vortex won't (as far as I know) import .YM songs in .. it'll only open ZX Spectrum tracker tunes from various chip-trackers.
It only outputs to these trackers too but also to a SNDH file so you can hear them on the ST and any other machine that can replay these files.

OK, I made it at last.
Although I wrote only one song for YM chip (in central and western Europe more popular are AY chips in ZX, so almost all my songs are made for AY) but I converted that one and checked it out on ST.
And... Worx perfectly.
(Well, except of one, really only one bass note which is easy to repair).
Most of eastern Europe (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and so on) tunes for Spectrum should sound exactly the same on ST (of course keepin' in mind they play a bit higher
), as in these countries Spectrums have YM chip instead of AY.
Once again thanx to everybody for help.

Of course they work but they sound differently (not nice btw).NiceGuyUK wrote:As far as I know, the AY and YM chips were pin-compatible and interchangable. Any tune designed for an AY *should* work on a YM given the right player.
Apart from more soft sound on YM (many ppl prefers it than AY),
both chips have different... hm, hm... I could say - volume-tables.
The best would be simply an example, I assume.
So - when I write a song for AY and play it on YM, You will hear drums, basses (mostly the ones with buzz), and some lead instruments or chords will be veeeeery silent.
I did some tests a while ago with replacing the YM inside the ST with a AY chip, and there was no difference from what i could tell... except for the AY sounded very muffled/soft because it had different soundoutput level compared to YM, the soundcircuit (resistors and caps) inside the ST is designed for YM.
