RAMTOS vs EmuTOS

Post by danboid »

My STFM is still running TOS 1.0.2 so to boot EmuTOS I have been using my sidecart or a boot floppy.

I have successfully used RAMTOS to temp upgrade my ST to 1.0.4. If I was to replace my 1.0.2 EEPROMs with EmuTOS, could I use RAMTOS to temp switch to TOS 1.0.4 or is there another program that would allow me to temp switch from EmuTOS to TOS via software?

Exxos doesn't sell TOS swtchers with emutos. Ideally I'd be able to switch between 1.0.4 and the latest EmuTOS. I did ask him about the possibility of him programming me such a chip but nothing came of it and I can't remember why.

I've already asked Peter (the RAMTOS dev) if he thought this could work and he was unsure. He's not the biggest fan of EmuTOS as I think most of you know.

How about SidecarTridge TOS? In my opinion, this gives you more flexibility than a TOS switch.

That is of course possible. RAMTOS can be started under EmuTOS to load, e.g., TOS 1.04.

However, I would also recommend a flashable TOS solution such as the SidecarTridge TOS Emulator or the CloudyStorm ST. EmuTOS has (semi-)regular releases, and for sure you wouldn't want to burn new EPROMs every time. Preferably, you get a solution that includes the 256 kiB ROM decoder, since EmuTOS 256k has a few additional nice features.

The SidecarTridge TOS Emulator doesn't work with my revision of STFM last time I checked.

I've got exxos' 4 MB shifter RAM expansion already installed in my ST. Can I use that alongside the Cloudy/Storm?

Will I have to remove the shielding to get cloudy + storm to fit in my STFM case?

Will I also need to buy a programmer to program cloudy?

How much do they cost?

Cloudy and stormy information, fitting instructions, programming information is all available online. On this forum as well as on their dedicated website.

I found the wiki pages for these but not where to buy them. Links please.

I would've thought their wiki pages would've linked to where they can be bought but it seems not.

I'm using STorm-ST in my STacy, and Cloudy + Lightning ST in my Mega ST4.

They are great pieces of hardware, IMHO. :)
