Wow, amazing stuff. Sometimes it's easy to forget just how good Spectrum (and later
Photochrome) really were.

Actually it "only" uses the original 512 colour palette of the Atari ST so it's like a showcase for the original Spectrum 512 program. The images have been created using Flux AI with the purpose to include many details to match a sweet spot to avoid dithering.

Is there an executable version to enjoy on our ST's?

There's a download link on the Youtube site:
https://tinyurl.com/mr2p56sr
It's in .ST format. I used JayMSA to unarchive it.
HTH's.

I've added a MSA link as well: https://www.anides.de/flux_slide.msa
You can run that MSA file online using http://absencehq.de/atariaviary/

Looks nice! Also with EmuTOS, as long as one remembers to use non-US (50Hz) TOS version...Anima wrote: ↑Sun Sep 01, 2024 10:31 am Actually it "only" uses the original 512 colour palette of the Atari ST so it's like a showcase for the original Spectrum 512 program. Nice pictures! Could you share some of them in the original 24bits colors? I'm curious to see how it would look with Amiga HAM mode

Re: New Spectrum512/4096 slideshow by Anima
Sure.
Btw.: you can use these images (by drag and drop) with ComfyUI to recreate them and more based on the prompt.

Re: New Spectrum512/4096 slideshow by Anima
Hmm, oddly enough, I couldn't get the slideshow program to work here on my STacy.
The screens were horribly scrambled.
It did work though, with another version of the slideshow program.

It seems that the included slide show program doesn't switch the refresh rate to 60 Hz. Mind to give a link to the other (working) version?

I'm not sure where I got it from - it's been on my drive(s) for so long.
But I'll zip it up later and just add it here.
The pictures are great, btw!

Here is that file. It's size is slightly bigger than the one that won't work, and the
interface is different. You can see the menu below:

Beautiful images, with judicious use of color palettes At first I thought the program had a trick to keep the screen borders intact. I tested with the MI-3 slideshow to checkAnima wrote: ↑Sun Sep 01, 2024 10:31 am Actually it "only" uses the original 512 colour palette of the Atari ST so it's like a showcase for the original Spectrum 512 program. Re: New Spectrum512/4096 slideshow by Anima
nice pictures! here are sliced-HAM version. Looks slightly better than original SPC format but to be fair mostly because Amiga is using 4096 colors here instead of 512. I'm curious to see same pictures with modern Atari STE multi-color format

Re: New Spectrum512/4096 slideshow by Anima
Thanks for the HAM images. Definetely HAM > Spectrum 512 in this case (so 4096 > 512).
Btw.: "sliced HAM" means a new palette each line, right? Do you have a link for the HAM images as well and a specific HAM viewer software?
Here are three different palette versions of one image (Spectrum 512, Spectrum 4096 and "Spectrum 29791"):

Re: New Spectrum512/4096 slideshow by Anima
Here are three versions; MPP Mode 2, Sliced HAM and the 24-bit source for the MPP picture. Open them in separate tabs and cycle through. Sliced HAM is a little bit better than MPP Mode 2, but that's to be expected. I think MPP does a smashing job considering the hardware limits
STe with MPP Mode 2: Blitter to get 56 unique colours per scanline
Commandline: bmp2mpp --optimal --mode=2 --ste --double file.bmp mode2.mpp
Leonards Sliced HAM:
24-bit original (scaled to 320*192):
While I think the blitter method to output colours is optimal on MST/STe/MSTe, maybe there are other algorithms that can generate a better picture (Photochrome 6?).
Finally a bonus; MPP Mode 3 (fullscreen!)
bmp2mpp --optimal --mode=3 --ste --double pic.bmp mode3.mpp
Fewer colours each line, but more pixels.

Re: New Spectrum512/4096 slideshow by Anima
what about a new 'mixed' mode? E.g. MPP Mode 1 with Mode 2 to surpass 56 colors per scanline.
I mean something like this in each scan-line:
- blitter - change a group of color registers every 8th pixel
- movem.l D0-D7,$FFFF8240.w - change color register every 4th pixel
- movem.l A0-A7,$FFFF8240.w - change color register every 4th pixel
- blitter - change a group of color registers every 8th pixel

Re: New Spectrum512/4096 slideshow by Anima
maybe we can use the half tone registers the same way (4 cycles per move), but it is less efficient than the movem because of the write cycle to HT register.
on STe it is also easy to use 336 width instead of 320 (using the 16 pixels trick) then it lets 512-336 cycles to preload stuffs with movem (for the 4 cycles instead of 8 per move)

Re: New Spectrum512/4096 slideshow by Anima
maybe in some cases the same HalfTone palette could be shared between two consecutive scanlines. This would allow to save some cycles.
And maybe the viewer could dynamically select the appropriate multicolor algorithm for a particular scanline.
