Are there common issues with the wide button Floppy drive?

Post by ThomasI »

I am trying to resurrect a ATARI 1040STf.
I replaced the GLUE Chip and the machine is back alive.

Turns out the wide button floppy drive does not work any more. The marking says TDK-T41V.
Are there any known common issues with this drive? Capacitors?

Right now it looks like this:
- no obvious defects
- Drive is recognized by the ST
- It spins freely and rotates the disk.
- The head unit moves freely and it starts to tick away when powered on and when try to access the disk.
- after some seconds it fails. GEM/TOS message: Drive is not responding.

I cleaned the heads and greased the head rails. No effect.

If anyone know common issues that can be adressed, any input is welcome... otherweise this will be replaced with a Gotek.

Just for confirmation: You did check that the issue is indeed with the drive and not the ST, right? For example by using a known-working drive in the same machine.

Also note that the majority of 'wide' button floppy drives are single sided, so will give that error if you try and read a standard double sided disk

Thank you for the inputs. But I have already tested out both suggestions:
- it is working fine with a known good floppy.
- I tryed double and single sided disks. I also tryed to format a disk. Nothing worked.

Btw: the format window shows me the option to format "double sided", on the not working drive. Does this mean, that the OS actually sees it as a double sided drive? Obviously, whatever I choose - single/double- it will fail with the error message.

the OS doesn't 'know' what drive you have, so always shows both. but formatting single sided should always work.

when you had the drive apart, is it one of the early units that use a drive belt? might be worth swapping it in case its stretched.

No, it is not the belt driven model. It seem to be a "modern" mechanism. ;)
Visualy and accustically it seems to have no problems rotating the disk.

Possibly, I see that "recap kits" are available for this drive.

I have three such drives, two are working and one is not. I have not tried to repair the broken drive yet, so I'm afraid I can't be of much help.

Ok... a partly success... Not with this drive but I managed to get a second wide-button Drive. It is a different manufacturer and it has a different strange behaviour:

This drive works just perfectly fine ... until it dosen´t.
It is able to happily load files... everything moves freely. And suddenly it stops and the ST displays a message that the drive is not responding. I can "retry" and "retry" again and again, it will NOT work. UNTIL I slightly move the (freely moving) head unit to a new position. With the next "retry" it continues on where it left off, like nothing just happened.
And it will work on perfectly until the "does not respond" cycle starts again.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause such a failure?
