STOT #2/2023 - Fire & Brimstone

Post by ThorN »

SSB & I had a little chat about the next game, we got two names: Ghouls'n Goblins and Fire & Brimstone.
We let a dize site decide and the winner is: Fire & Brimstone.

Game: Fire & Brimstone
Mode: Single Player (press fire and play)
Duration June 2023
Rules: Score and post a picture of your score in this thread
Advises: Cool players don't use save states :-)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
þorN's Ranking Service:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final Results:

1. LynXX 143700
2. þorN 32700
3. RiverPirate 21300
4. SSB 3100

Screens
1. þorN Level 3 Screen 1

Tipps:
--------
- In the first screen don't shoot the big guy. Simply pass him by.
- In the first screen shoot the raven to get a bridge potion. Use it in the screen with the fire and the hole behind it
- Be quick or be dead

and then turn left and when it's close to you turn right and walk through it.

3100 - it is hard to make a screenshot if you do not enter the high score table

About 4 or 5 screens in, there is a fire with a pit directly afterwards. How is one supposed to jump over this?
I am unable to make it without touching the fire and dying :(

I was able to do a screenshot when II had 3200 points :-) But I do not understand how to get shielded when you simply turn from left to right like in the first screen. In the screen with the two fire but a hole behind the 2nd one. I always fail, even that in Ataricrypts video I could see that he goes through the fire. Does anybody know?

I would even say we should forbid the use of save states because this alters the chances massively.
A score should be achived in one continuous play.

Does it matter for this game though? It's virtually impossible to proceed to the second screen.

Not sure this is a good game for STOT  First of all it's frustratingly difficult, but also on the second screen you can safely keep shooting bats and rack up points...

Just don' shoot at the guy and duck when he runs past you.
Once learned that is not the problem anymore ;)

After seeing another video from an Amiga walkthorugh (i try to only these the parts I'm stuck at) I saw that you need to shoot on the bird in the first screen to get the blue potion. This will show an bridge and then you could travel over the 2nd fire in the level where there is a hole behind the fire. But this is really unfair. At least I found Mjöllnir in the next screen. The game is really hard, so it's a good choice I would say, since the chance it hight that you reach a point where you wasn't before.

Save states for score are banned, since nobody could control it without a video as attachement. In this game for learning they are necessary it seems. But the score is only a real score without it. Recarding the birds: We had that problem before when we played Super Sprint. If you know such a place, please avoid it for the fun of it. So scoring in our round this month should end up in pictures with new screens where nobody was before.

So shooting anything that is not the background *is* a recommended technique in this game? :D
I'll give it a go.

I don't know if there are reliable rules in the game at all? First 20 times I played, I moved towards the giant in screen 1 and died when I hit him. Now I have a version (from Marcers USB) where I just walk through him ?? In Ataricrypt's video you wark through a fire, but I have to use a bridge above it, which is only available one time, so I have to avoid to come back to this screen.

On the other side, I'm alread a number of screens ahead of screen 3 I was before I this compo starts, so yes it's challenging, but you are able to make progress by training. I plan a twitch session playing the game tomorrow 10pm CEST.

I used the PASTI dump from Atarimania...and the big guy depends if you shot him.
Don't shoot and all is well..

Anyway I intend to play this some more as the looks and sounds are beautiful and there is an urge to get farther,

I also discovered that the STX files are single sided. This game would have run on my setup back in 1990 with just a SF354 available.

Does anyone know how to use the potions?
I only found out what button to press in order to change the weapon.

Found something different, but it works.
The potions currently in Thor's possession are shown at the bottom-right of
the screen. Potions are cast by pressing one of the cursor keys for the
left potion, or one of the keys on the numeric pad for the right potion.

BLUE-----------builds a magic bridge over certain obtacles
RED------------fires lightning bolt; kills or damages all enemies on screen
GOLD-----------gives Thor extra high jumping abilty
WHITE----------lights up dark rooms
I also found out that the game can be paused with F8 and continued with F9 which might be useful for taking score photos.

32700. Reached Level 3

Wow finally I reached a lot of goals this time (in fair scoring mode without shooting on birds and nastys all the time):
- finished Level 1
- finished Level 2
- Entered the high score table
- had fun
- don't gave up

I still wanted to try more, never managed anything decent. I gave up this time :(

The game itself looks pretty it is just too hard.

These are for the entry "2. þorN 32700" (first link is corrupt anyway) but I cannot find any proof for the entry "1. LynXX 143700".

yes, that's the one. We are in round 2 and need to get back into routines. Finding a flaw is also worth a celebration. We once played Super Sprint and there you was also able to get a lot of points because of a flaw.
