Hi Latz, try that shorter better quality cable. I've seen cables cause 'flapping' issues on network devices, so well worth testing another cable.

The daily Mint snapshot does not include the RTL8139.XIF driver.
What is the chance for that to be included ?

The chance is directly proportional to the time when I finish working on it: https://github.com/mikrosk/freemint/tree/rtl8139 ... i.e. not zero but have other things to keep me busy.

The most visible obstacle to finish this is to agree how the driver should work -- it calls quite a few PCI BIOS calls, I proposed to include them into the 'kerinfo' structure but it wasn't exactly welcome with praise: https://mikro.naprvyraz.sk/mint/freemin ... 01206.html

Ah ok. Glad to know it will be one day.
Just that after installing the snapshot, I had to come to this thread to get the file again.

Thank you Mikro for supporting us.

Hi,

first problem solved: I removed the USB card from my "main" Falcon...
...and now upload is working perfect!
Transferred zipfiles 2-13 MB to my LinuxPC with an average speed of 2700 MB/sec with Litchi,
a 100 MB mp3 file with ~1900 MB/sec. Great, i´m really happy!! :D

But this does not explain why my second Falcon (which don´t have an USB card) still shows exactly
the same problem. Tested a short network cable, no difference. I´ll have to investigate further.

Thank you all for your great help!

Glad that it is working for you now.

Other than why your other Falcon exhibited the same behavior, I wonder how is it that USB card "lame" the network card.
Something that we never know I guess.

Here we have 2 issues. The first one is that you hit a bug introduced by me in MiNT sources some days ago that I'm fixing now, where checks for some CPUs is not correctly done. The second is that the driver you are trying to use is not for PCI cards but for a network adapter which uses the cartridge and parallel ports. The driver's sources for the PCI card is not in the MiNT's repository yet.

Should start downloading from this post onward.
There are couple more following it, you need to find one that works well for you.
Try to following the messy thread as several people were reporting back.

I have tried everything suggested here and in the other CTPCI topics, but I cannot get the rtl8139.xif driver to load at all (I have tried both versions found here on the forum). I've tried all the versions of Mint so far including prepcibios as found here, with the exception of 1.17.0. Nothing is reported when booting Mint. I even tried the assemsoft driver, and that driver is at least reported when booting Mint, but it does not find the Realtek 8139D card (no card found).

I have ordered a couple more network cards since they are so inexpensive. A different version of 8139D, and also a 8139C version, but it sure seems that this is some kind of software problem since the driver is not showing up at all.

1st thing to check is if CTPCI detects all your cards at boot up. At times my CTPCI cable are messed up they will not be detected.
You can see the pnp hex code and these are matched by the xif driver.
Secondly turn on the built in Drivers in TOS and see if it able to allocate IP address.
Frankly I do not know how to use the built in Drivers, maybe use it with STING.

Okay, this answer makes me think that maybe drivers.hex should not be flashed (present) for Mint??? Does Mint handle everything for USB and Ethernet and I have a conflict because the TOS drivers are active? Is there a way to turn them off without re-flashing with only TOS and no drivers.hex? I can easily flash with just the TOS. Thanks!

With the CTPCI hardware, TOS takes care of everything regarding USB, MiNT isn't involved.

Yes, I tested and now I understand that drivers.hex is needed for things to work, and that the TOS drivers are used for USB even under Mint. Thanks!

Can someone please let me know if you rtl8139.xif driver is reported on the mint boot screen when it loads properly? For me, nothing is showing at all, and at the end of the boot screen it reports "network unreachable." Thanks!

Thanks Latz, I’m going to try some shorter IDE cables and some different network cards, but it sure seems like the driver should report something, even if there is no card in the slot. I don’t have a clue. I think I have tried everything.

Check in MiNT's boot menu that the option "Write bootlog" is not enabled to "File", this makes driver's messages to not be shown on the console.

MINT could have simply wrote to the display "Logging all to c:\mint\mint.log from now onwards" to avoid mis-stepping user who accidentally setting it on.

I checked my settings, and it is not set to log to file. Can someone please confirm that the driver reports on the screen even if the card is not present? It just seems that in my case the driver is not loading for some reason. I have tried a "bare" system, no ACC or auto programs other than mint, etc. I've tried all the versions of mint, even 1.17.0 now. Still nothing to show the driver is loading at all. For now I'll go back to the netusbee until the other hardware arrives for more testing of the CTPCI networking. Thanks!

For my CTPCI project I have Video, USB (mouse and storage working great; the keyboard map is all funky for PC keyboard, but I'm using the Falcon keyboard anyway, so no problem there).

I would love to resolve the network issue if anyone has any insight. As I stated before, nothing is reported at the Mint boot screen when using the rtl8139.xif driver in Mint, and at the end of the boot I get "network unreachable." I know that things are setup correctly because it functions just fine with the netusbee. I am using "rtk0" for the name of the 8139D ethernet card in the mint config files.

I'm modding a PC case to eventually house the PCI four card riser and the ATX power supply I'm using. I'm not sure how I'm going to route all the cables into the original falcon case yet.

Thanks!
