That video shows practically nothing. Not more than title - Ataribox
I guess that this is very early public interest poll in fact - they want to see about it, before invest plenty of money in development.

What makes you think it ?rpineau wrote:PC based hardware ... . . . . .
Famous Schrodinger's cat hypothetical experiment says that cat is dead or alive until we open box and see condition of poor animal, which deserved better logic. Cat is always in some certain state - regardless from is observer able or not to see what the state is.

BTW, financing will be provided by crowdfunding. It's interesting that I didn't read this in any of the articles, yet.
But in an statement issued to their investors on the occasion of the recent E3 convention Atari S.A. writes:
Translation (by me): "In the meantime, the [Atari] group has released a video revealing a first design of that new product, while the functionality and the technical characteristics will be announced as the work progresses. The group estimates that it is able to develop an attractive product, using the reputation of the Atari brand in the hardware domain. To limit the risk, this product will initially be launched with a crowdfunding campaign."

Re: Ataribox
Found this update with more details:

"the Ataribox is a PC-like machine with "modern internal specs", according to Atari. Players will get access to classic games, as well as "current gaming content".
Backing up that claim, the images shared in the newsletter (likely computer renders of what the device will look like) reveal HDMI output and an ethernet port for internet, as well as four USB ports and an SD card slot, presumably for expandable storage. Though not confirmed, it's safe to assume the console also has wireless capabilities for internet and its (yet-to-be-revealed) controllers."

"current gaming content" - my bid for a Steambox is rising....and IMHO the only way it might get actual sales.

Re: Ataribox
I agree.
It has use as a Steambox.
As an independent platform it stands no chance, they don't have the money for it and therefore it wouldn't compete technically and therefore no-one would buy it over an XBox or PS.
Frankly I think the best option would be for a good case manufacturer to licence the right to make gaming PC cases, with designs subject to Atari approval. Like how Razer do it.
Size wise it probably couldn't pull off being a mini ITX case with a discrete GPU card option side by side without making it too long, or above it without making it too thick.
They could try and make a mini gaming machine like some of the high end Zotacs, which are really nice.
I'd certainly buy one to replace my Skull Canyon NUC if they did. And if they had a good enough GPU I'd also get rid of my Razer Core T980Ti GPU box too!

Re: Ataribox
I've tried to convince them for 10-years to do a mini itx based gaming PC for the masses and this is the result? Unless they pull off some serious NVidia magic from under the hood with this I would be surprised but then I guess we'll see... and this 'box' isn't what I would personally want or need. We have enough shitty me-too underspecced or underpowered media boxes already capable of doing most of what everyone wants to do. I fear it's going to be just a money grab at using the Atari name for something that doesn't solve any problems currently in the gaming area or fulfill the true desires of the user base or what's left, as it is.EmpireAndrew wrote:I agree.

Re: Ataribox
Yeah, Zotac style is great. I own a Dell Alienware Alpha with Win 8 and for my uses, it is great as a Steambox. But this is also a reason not to buy the Ataribox for me, even if it is a Steambox.
The Alienware does all Atari stuff via emulation and PC stuff via Steam. And it has a mobile NVIDIA chipset inside, enough horsepower for anything except the most recent 4K titles, more than well enough for Atari needs.
But I will opt to buy any useful Atari release for it as long as it is available.
OTOH anything standalone or only Android will fail, I'm pretty sure. The only means to actually get back to business is to offer a really large software base. A Steambox achieves that IMHO. And there are a lot of great Indie titles on Steam that would make great ST ports to, if one reduces graphics gizmos to ST standards.

Re: Ataribox
No own GUI either, it is dead.
It would have been more realistic to state from the beginning "This will be a Steam Box with nice packaging. We (Atari) will provide software support on the Steam platform."

Modern gaming ain't necessarily bad. Avoid ports from Android, free-to-play titles with "buy stuff" options and overpriced AAA+ titles.
One can find alot of nice and retro feeling Indigams on Steam that are well worth playing.

I'm sure there are many cool titles. I just have so limited free time for my hobby, so all my time goes with ST stuff. Maybe when kids move away i have more time for modern games.simonsunnyboy wrote:Modern gaming ain't necessarily bad.
