RF shielding on XL and old gear in general.

What is the purpose of RF shielding? It may be easy to say that "it shields from RF" but what does that mean? Is it like an electrical grounding that protects the computer mobo or is the shield protecting people from it's dangerous radio frequency weaponry that will turn me into the incredible hulk?

More importantly, I've heard some mods may require removing it to fit everything. Plus mine looks decrepit so I'd consider tossing it if everything still sits happily. Is the shield perhaps useless protection imposed by over regulating safety agencies on the 1980s electronic industry? Is it's only purpose nostalgic based because "it was on the original so it's awesome" or for structural integrity?

If I remove the RF module (or never use it) would that negate any further need for the shield?

I bet there are others going commando with their computer.

I dont bother with shielding on my xl's, never found any interference to a monitor with or with out them.

Back in the day, the FCC stated that an electrical device could not interfere
with other devices, for example, TV sets.

So Atari (and other manufacturers) had to keep RF down to a certain minimum.

The RF shielding was intended for that purpose.

IIRC.

I've personally never had any problems with Atari computers that I've modified
the RF shielding on. That would include my 800XL and my STacy.

Interestingly enough, on some models Atari actually sprayed an anti RF layer onto
the inside of the top cover (Mega STe, for example).

Yeah- I may do away with mine then. I see this sentiment reflected on other mod pages. Does anyone need an extra one and is there anyone needing it as a mold to manufacture brand new replacement ones?

I've tossed the RF shielding of my 600 XL too, for the following reasons:

A. It had rust on it and looked decrepit.
B. I have fitted a Ultimate 1 MB inside, so it wouldn't fit anyway.

Another reason could be, easy access for fitting even more upgrades in that tiny case....
