I'm pretty sure "Empire" (war game) had also MIDI music [1] in its intro.

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
ECO fully supported the MT-32 with a very complex and (appropriately) evolving tune specifically written to use the MT32's voices. I actually went so far as to record it once so I could listen to it in the car...Dio wrote:ECO, if I remember correctly?
Nice handle, by the way - as in Ronnie James, or another Dio?

"Mono-timbral" isn't as limiting as it may seem. With multi-part/timbral instruments, it's generally possible to manipulate a single channel of MIDI data into a halfway decent multi-timbral orchestration, in realtime, through careful instrument selection and note-range limiting.
Putting that into perspective, here is one example of how Ultima III can sound during gameplay, given my attempt at baroque instrumentation and tuning, and leveraging two Yamaha FB-01 units:

For what it's worth, this would have been entirely possible back in 1986, when the ST version of Ultima III was released.

Just out of curiosity, can you play MIDI sound and still get the games sound effects
or is it still limited to either music or effects but not both? (as it normally is in the
game)
Thanks.

Yes.DarkLord wrote:Just out of curiosity, can you play MIDI sound and still get the games sound effects...

Since the MIDI output is completely unaffected by the "V" toggle, you do indeed have the option of concurrent MIDI music and YM2149 sound-effects.

That is freaking awesome. Okay, now I'll have to add an MT32 to my list of things to get.Cloudschatze wrote: Yes.

Unfortunately so does not many games (i can only think of ST Karate) support MIDI music and YM sound effects at the same time, by choosing the MIDI music option so does the YM usually go silent and you have no sound effects... it all up to the game and it is not a limitation of the ST.
The Sierra games might use the Roland synth for sound effects though.

I saw Chopper-X was confirmed in the linked thread at the start but wanted to confirm 100% that it has a MIDI sound track. I learned this the hard way when I was younger as I'd been playing around with Quartet and my Casio keyboard. I got bored and fired up Chopper-X to play, the keyboard behind me sprang to life at a crazy volume and scared the hell out of me!

BadMood (Falcon Doom I/II remake) has also pretty marvelous music both with MIDI and internally generated sounds. Although it's Falcon only and doesn't support playing both MIDI and internal sound at the same time, I'd say it's definitely worth a try, if somebody hasn't tried it yet...

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
That's really sad Monkey island 1 does not use midi music
I can live with the reduced palette compared to the other versions (Amiga has 32 colors and PC has 256), but the music is really bad too
Will have to play the PC or the Amiga version
Would it be hard to implement the midi data from the pc version into the St one ?
I could use Scummvm on my Falcon , but i can't get my MT32 to work with Scummvm, only native games or Scummvm for pc. I think MT32 support is disabled in the Atari version

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
For info, i downloaded Larry III from d-bug, http://d-bug.mooo.com/, but unfortunately this version had the MT32 support removed (as mentioned in the readme.txt) i've been able to reactivate it by copying "Music.prg", "MT32.drv" and "Music.rsc" files from Police Quest II (should work with any Sierra game).

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
I've been scanning in my games disks and manuals, and the manual for ST Protector (seems to be a Paradox game) says it has midi support.

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
BTW, For those looking for a Roland MT-32, you can also buy the Roland MT-100 which is the same sound hardware as the MT-32, it just provides the ability to read/write MIDI tracks to floppy disks.. (a custom 2.8" disk unfortunately).
+1 for the person here who recommended ECO for MIDI. That's a very interesting game!
EDIT: Add to the list:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? has MIDI support on the ST

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
I got Space Quest III working with MIDI support:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny5ONMX-R2I
Since I don't have a real MT-32 I used an ST emulator and munt:
http://munt.sourceforge.net/
Might be a nice Saturday project to setup a Raspberry Pi as a cheap MT-32 box

Love that sound on SQIII! Now that I've got a Mega STe working here, I really
need to setup MIDI with my Roland MT32 and get to crankin'!
