I think you are maybe taking it too far with multiTOS

With out should play ok, with a speeder nemesis or Power Up2 even better.

I was playing MP3 files without any problems on
- Falcon 030
- 16Mhz
- NO FPU
- only 4Mb of RAM.
(but - with some usual TOS, not the 'multi' stuff).

I don't remember the prog I was using.

Surely I was playin' full movies on above config and Aniplayer.

Stock falcon should be able to because it uses the DSP , not CPU, to decode.
There's some one in Youtube showing jsut that.

i would have thought that it should be workable, as the CPU would only need to update the GUI.

if you have issues with mp3 and 16MB 60ns DRAM {edo or fast page or etc} and tos 4.04 on fast like 100ns or 120ns or faster rom

check your wait states

it can be adjusted to suite the faster ram and rom using the solder pads U46 above and left of the internal expansion port pin sets
and dram type!!! depends what revision of falcon you have later by far revision like D is a different schematics from this posted here

ok i remember

machine ram wait state set to zero is pad U46 1 = open for zero wait state

dram type 5,6 is not needed

unless you have a later REV D development machine {vrare}

rom wait state is

100ns 0 0 open 3 open 4
120ns 0 1 open 3 close 4
150ns 1 0 close 3 open 4
200ns 1 1 close 3 close 4

if you had previously an old 4MB default DRAM

and pad U46 1 closed then open it ie remove the blob on U46 pad 1 {i think far left }
if its open close it



then its wait state 0 and not 1 as it will be with older ram 80 70 ns

60ns you can remove this blob

It depends on the quality of the mp3. A standard falcon can play up to 160KBps stereo mp3's or 128Kbps joint stereo. Also multitos has a big overheard, using a recent version of mint will allow you to play them better.

Also, if you could find a 44.1 external clock for the falcon then that will improve the result since the program won't need to resample the date.

im not sure about the wait state or rom state you check as links on U46
they i find are NOT documented

but as ive not found it remains a mystery... other than wait state
as big endian i expect atleast the wait state pad 1 U46 to be closed to form 1 and open to form 0 wait state or zero wait states
all falcons ive opened with a 4MB 70/ 80 ns dram fitted is always link 1 set so unset it remove for wait state 0 i assumed
given that is what i based rom type on ....
so my own falcon boot up very fast indeed when set this way
i use a 100ns rom and 60ns fast page simm 16MB and magic
so i know its far faster to boot and prefetch than it was solder blobs set as i have

even the service guides and all other info says zero 0 nothing about this pad strip

so .... i use all U46 link blobs open

i use 60ns fast page simm
and 100ns rom and nemesis set to even 55mhz works fine ...!!

i do agree with bad mp3 for falcon
set exported mp3 right and in the right time frame for 44.1 khz stuff

A Falcon will flawlessly play mp3 files using FalcAMP.
No joint-stereo with full sound though - it's played as mono.

Don't know if MultiTOS eats too many resources, but I had no problems running FalcAMP on MagiC 6.2, having the mp3 files on a FAT32 partition and chatting with AtarIRC or AtarICQ at the same time.

Aniplayer is way too slow on mp3 decoding.

I notice that I hear cracks and clicks in FalcAMP if volume sliders is maximum (or close to maximum)! If I put it little above 50% sound is good without any cracks and clicks but than I need (obviously) to turn volume up on my amplifier.

Does anybody else have this problem with FalcAMP?

EDIT: I found what is problem! These files that have clicks and cracks have it also on Mac - simple file is badly samples/converted! But on Falcon at maximum volume you can hear it with no problems. On Mac, I can hear it but only with headphones.

except this "issue" I simple adore quality of Falcon030 output! I love that bass booster - I remember that when I bought PC and connect it to same amplifier and speakers I was disappointed with sound (onboard Sound card). Than my friend suggested to my to buy TurtleBeach sound card with quality DA (at time I did not know why Falcon sound better than PC). With TurtleBeach it was same. Only than I realize that Falcon factory bass booster is responsible for superior sound (my opinion) !

plays 320 if you set to medium resolution and take care not to nudge the mouse (or it will lag)

FalcAMP is playing stereo mp3 files, if they're encoded as stereo and not as joint-stereo.
Joint-stereo encoded files are forced to mono output as FalcAMP can't cope with 'em.

Well, actually George Nakos is preparing a really cool player of RAW files for STE (well, 8bit but 50kHz quality, so it's powerful and sounds great) but lately he's silent (killing some bugs with the player's speed). I don't want to bother him too much, so I didn't rush him. Maybe next week I'll write him asking about any news.
You make playlist in TXT files and You have the next closest thing to MP3 that You can have on Your STE. And most splendid thing is, that the prog works even with as slow device as a satandisk is.
