Re: does any anyone have one of these usb mouse converters
I don't know about it other than it's £5 cheaper than the PS/2 adapter: http://pest.atari.org/
Nice. We have two to choose from.

Re: does any anyone have one of these usb mouse converters
Not HID compliant. You need a USB mouse that uses ps/2 protocol or a ps/2 mouse with one of those ps/2 to USB adaptor thingies.
STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's
Re: does any anyone have one of these usb mouse converters
If you check the forum there are many posts (one about a week or 2 ago) about someone who brought the cheaper adapter and regretted it. Seems to be a common trend, and if you read the small print on the USB page, its not really even a USB adapter.

so is there any "real" usb options available for the ST? or do I just need to get some ps2 mouse?

Re: does any anyone have one of these usb mouse converters
"Real" USB gives the Netusbee card but except for a mouse driver, hardly anything works with that yet
Otherwise the Firebee is supposed to take HID compliant devices.

What's so wrong with ps2 anyway?
Poor little ps2. Just 'cos it's not fashionable.

Crumbs. I always seem to see them around.
Good job I bought a few extra just last month. Best stock up on the keyboards too. Some old PCs just won't let you handle them with USB before booting into software.

I wonder if it's possible to make a HID to bus-mouse converter using a Teensy?

Re: does any anyone have one of these usb mouse converters
PeST could have USB sockets installed, though its like that other guy on ebay, its not "really" a usb adapter. I think there was a project for PS2 bus mouse online some years ago and it just got copied, hence the one on ebay.
Thing is with PS2, it has been around for a long time now, and there are still 1000's of PS2 mice about on ebay. True they are/will be getting harder to find, though a lot of the USB mice out there wouldn't work anyway, heck, I had a many mice that wouldn't even work on a PC, some PC's they would work on, some wont, so what chance do developers have in getting a USB mouse to convert to BUS protocol ?! I wouldn't be so quick to ditch PS2 in favour for USB.
I could re-program PeST for proper USB support, i think USB has 2 extra packets of data over PS2, its been some years! Though when we looked at USB before, it was a pretty unreliable protocol, or at least its "chipset users" did a slapdash method of using it. I can forsee a whole epic of problems in switching over to USB. Its also the time involved, I would love to develop a USB protocol, Though its a lot of work for probably very little return. Maybe if I have more free time next year I will take a look into it.
I think there would not be much call for such things anymore, I think Effiel? is more in demand, I could produce those for people, or anything for that matter. Though I think others have these already on sale somewhere, I don't keep up with current events much!

Re: does any anyone have one of these usb mouse converters
Wanted to share my experiences here
Bought the USB adapter - not good. Nothing works with it that I own. Some mini toy mouse works (sent by seller) but too small for a human to use
PEST - got one 2nd hand. DIdnt work with cheapo eBay mouse but saw some posts suggesting Genius Netscroll works with adapters in Amiga USB things so decided to try.
Genius Netscroll 120 Optical works fine with PEST. Very well actually
Also MS Wheel Mouse Optical (a common mouse) USB works fine with the MS USB/PS2 adapter.
Personally if I was going back in time I would have just gone for PEST in first place. It also has the code to adjust sensitivity which the USB doesnt. PEST FTW!

This. Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical w/ a PS2/USB adapter works great. The WMO is probably the most common USB mouse there is. Stores by me have bins of them for $5 each. So USB & Optical on the ST is already a reality and a good one if you have a PeST.Methanoid wrote: Genius Netscroll 120 Optical works fine with PEST. Very well actually

another method altogether to concider
some touch screens use ps2 or com RS232 {ones in cars or planes etc ..}
you can use an lcd svideo input touch screen via a pest etc...
works magic
you find them all day long on ebay
Re: does any anyone have one of these usb mouse converters
I think I might have a hardware addon that will allow PS2 and or USB mice to be added to the machine.
I am looking into this small addon.
I posted in another topic a picture of a usb/ps2 serial card the card is now working on my TT thanks to Dal.

Since this post I have the card working with a ps2 trackball on my TT.
Works well. Thanks Dal again.
If this is useful to others then I'm sure it can be reproduced easily enough.

Re: does any anyone have one of these usb mouse converters
That is for an Amiga A1200... You can find them on eBay every now and then on on Allegro.pl regularly. The USB port is only for USB devices that support PS2 over USBTTowner wrote:I think I might have a hardware addon that will allow PS2 and or USB mice to be added to the machine.

I tell you what. I will look to see if I have a usb mouse and try it. If it works now after the pic chip has been recoded then bonus.
Let you know how I get on. ok!

Yep. I wasted my money on one of these. None of the 3 optical mice I tried worked.Dal wrote:Not HID compliant. You need a USB mouse that uses ps/2 protocol or a ps/2 mouse with one of those ps/2 to USB adaptor thingies.

I didn't even know what "HID compliant" meant until I read this thread.

Logitech PS2 track ball works. That's what I use. Wheel won't function. although come to think of it I have not tried.
But trackball and click buttons do!

I have both. PEST works with PS2 mouse and with USB mouse with adapter (eg MS Wheel Mouse)
That USB thing is (IMHO) poo and hardly works with any thing... MS Wheel Mouse NOT WORKING...
Do not be fooled. PEST works. That doesnt really!!!
Re: does any anyone have one of these usb mouse converters
I sent my USB-PS2 dongle thing back to the guy in Dublin who sells them. In fairness he gave me a refund, no questions asked.
So I bought a PeST and it worked first time with my PS2 mouse. Fantastic.
So, unless you have exactly the kind of mouse that USB dongle thing works with, just buy the PeST and save yourself a lot of hassle.

The ones on ebay are AFAIK a hack of the "free" open source project from years ago. It was the first thing myself and Aly tested and it wasn't any good, its why we programmed PeST from bottom up.
Also I can assure everyone, that There is only myself, and Idek Tramielski (Germany http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.ph ... 01#p231090) who has the official PeST product. If it does not look like a PeST and not sold as a PeST, then it isn't a PeST.
