Improve the search functionality on AF

Post by catmando »

Could the ability to assign keywords or keyword phrases be added to Af to improve the search functionality of the site? Say 5 keywords for the poster and then 2 keywords per user that replies to it. I've seen this on other forums I use and it greatly improves the search functionality when looking for a specific topic

Atari STE Tos 1.62/2.06 | 4mb | Floppy A-B Mod | IDE SD 4GB

If you can find a mod for it here then I'll take a look for you. Anything that makes searching easier is a good thing.

In all honesty, I tend to use Google with a formed search like:
www.atari-forum.com: my search phrase

Does the Advanced search not cover what you need?
STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's

theres this:
http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/m ... _tag_cloud
which uses the automated search index to generate tags, but I can't find anything that lets a user add keywords / tags to a post.

also, can we add this one: http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/t ... ouse_over/
it's very useful :)

I think just able to search for 3 characters words will be an improvement.

That's a good method but I bet half the people that use this site dont know how to do that

The standard search is so bad that even the advanced search would benefit from it.

I certainly did not know this format.
Normally I do "site:www.atari-forum.com my search phrase"

Yup sorry, I got the syntax slightly wrong there

Thanks for the correction!

Sorry didn't mean to correct you.
There are so many Google hacks - I use them to do currency conversion and tell time of a city as well.
I thought I learned a new command.

It's pretty good like that... you can google things like 35 miles per us gallon in l/100km and get back the answer 6.72041667 l/100km :)

So I guess the question is, how can the forum's search function offer better than a normal web search? One thing is completeness I suppose; it's possible that not all threads/posts ever made on the forum are stored in Google's cache/search memory. It is surprising how quickly posts get indexed though - it seems the site is popular enough that it gets spidered a lot.
What else could a search offer then?
tá'n poc ar buile!
