FIT JUMPER PINS AND 4xTOS MADE EASY WITHOUT A FULL DISMANTLE

Post by simbo »

Hi

here is a pictorial guide how to do this
pictorial only im afraid. its basic stuff

and self explanitory as each picture has some text attached
infact you can replace anything in ataris pcb's without totaly taking it apart cut off pull out suck the solder out

solder from above few rules .....
dont over heat and resolder to desolder is best
wet the iron regulary and clean it's tip with a wet sponge
use minimal solder 1-2mm of .5 mm dia flux core solder
you can use flux liquid like no clean stuff youll get in likes of maplin or RS to aid this desolder

resolder again when it wont suck dry you can add flux

to mount new stuff just solder or wet one pin first and stand straight

if you need help or advice eboard 'Personal Mail' does work so send a message...

remember when pulling the 0 ohm link resistors out
heat them plenty but dont push the iron wet it also with solder and clean first to 'tin' it
you need to wet the solders on them with fresh stuff 1mm then lift gently out

if you look this board takes a sequence and posts in reverse bottom to top
how stupid is this??? first picture here is at the bottom
sorry i did post the first picture first

typical php

if you have no jumpers or link resistors {does happen on atari pcb's}

there is small tracks between the pads
you need to cut these links and desolder the holes
again fresh solder is best and a model knife etc...
then add the jumper pins strips

I think the pictures are out of order.

That is one big soldering iron.

ye??? try doing it with a 15watt if you have ground planes involved
anyway im known for my big 'iron' where plenty of heat and a good shaft is required

the pictures are out of order beleve it or not becouse i uploaded picture one first !!!

and this is the boards fault not mine as it doesnt poses the correct php extender or upload applet
to invert up order posted pictures or provide a 'displayed order ' applet
i did point this out in post number 0 in this topic Yellow_Colorz_PDT_15
sorry you didnt enjoy it enough to post other than crtique alex Yellow_Colorz_PDT_31

never watched red dwarf episode 'backward' you remind me of father christmas

as a point of logic :contract:
this would be concidered an upgrade ending or 'begining' with a working screen would be best maybe [smilie=greencolorz4_pdt_03.gif]
so therefore would read up the way :coffe:

it doesnt take a mix between spock and gandi Yellow_Colorz_PDT_37 to work this out

be rest assured that after i eat some food {chicken and veg} ill photo myself using my top2049
to program a set of 4mb eproms after i prepair all the images then add the chips and two switches to the side of the case
and a working end result

4X images on ste is the plan here with this ste

so be patient

I figured you could re-arrange the order of the images to make it more sensical. I did not realise that the image order was out of your control.

The numbering of the pictures help a lot.

Connecting the switches to A17 & A18, do you now have four selectable 256Kbyte banks?

(Edit: Ah yes, there are two 8-bit EPROMs in parallel, the switches select between four 128Kbyte banks in each EPROM which together give four selectable 256Kbyte banks.)

Placing the photos in the right order is simple for the people viewing like myself. I will save every photo to my drive in a folder and number each one accordingly, plus I will save the webpage to the same folder.

good thinking

here is a multi image i made and tested
although there seems to be a problem with v1.62 uk from the net
so ill export my set of 1.62 roms at some point
one to check
i got the image in a few places and tried them there all gubbed
named
tos1.62uk seems kncked however boots up fine and runs normaly

to see the error start sysinfo program it bombs with 3 bombs and crashes the machine
however everything else i tested with it worked even cubase 3.1 and its fussy

perhaps this copy of sysinfo from stformat is gubbed somehow
you can always change the segment from your own set if you load the image bins to your programmers buffer
and load the 162 segments hi lo 00000-1FFFF
anyway
this archive contains this setup

00000-1FFFF = TOS1.62 {not sure this image from the net is good ill prob never use it myself}
20000-3FFFF = TOS2.06 { perfect}
40000-5FFFF = supertos 2.06 {added this and that patches again works fine}
60000-7FFFF = emutos v0.8.4 {again works perfect and a very nice replacement to tos indeed 256k image }

if there is ANY objections to these images being here then it will be removed

ok the image tos1.62uk from the net is gubbed .... my roms work with this sysinfo
so ill add this into the image but as i say ill never use it myself

i just deleted the image i added as most people can just request one or make there own
building them is easy using the right tools

if you go to the dataman site there programmer front end is VERY good for this
and will even run without there hardware connected
so you can save off the total 4mb if you like and flash
i think proofed roms are better and some images
2.06 from the net seems fine as do others... i am in the middle of making a set of 2.06 magic rom parts

ill replace emutos with magiC and make a v1.62 original roms that were in the machine
2.06uk from the net image
super tos as its handy
and magiC as 4

how can it been every single post i think just about anyone makes you obviously take little time to read and digest

before you cant help yourself anymore and post a rant or two...

you always pick holes in or condem the idea outright
its not spelt right you cant type as i cant understand it
thats wrong etc etc ....

the hedge needs a trim, that picture is squint, your left tyre preasure is 1lbs per square inch lower than the right
by my guess, you need to paint your fence

your like a mother in law.....

now you intimate the order could be changed in what is clearly an already ordered in time process
im not stupid enought to post the pictures in the wrong order alex
i simply posted the first picture first and not last ....

i think i could scan a few forums and collate enough alexh classic's to build an alexh.bot script
you add a link to your post press the link and it gives you a crytic dependant on a scan and parse of the post the link to it is in

Luv you too babe.

Some TOS ROM's are only 192Kbytes. What do you need to do in that situation? Pad zeros on the end of each Hi/Lo file?

Are all 192Kbyte ROMs unsuitable for STe anyway?

you use whats fits im sure dear .... :mrgreen:
it depends what exactly can get addresses
the custom roms where 28pin and had no A17 so are 512kb or 1000kb both ive seen in ste...and later. or mega
this is why you dont 'clear' the left over when loading if you load all leftover bytes as FF this will get written
keep's it to the actual image lenght....
customs roms in older machines where just that roms not eproms but you can erase them using a small hole in the top
and a piece of fibre glass polished using an end kit

where atari created its own dia setup for 28pin in a 32pin socket as it reused the up and comming 32bit a17 a18 {still in military at the time}
this was also used by several other companies including sugar poo and comodore...

i will add that if you use a vacume flat plane drill or a vacume mill bit
you can open these and even erase and reprogram them or take the code

i know people who xray ic's esp the older z80 80/80 and 6502 to gain access to hidden commands and op's reset refunction etc

The software that comes with your EPROM programmer seems much better than the software for mine (or the one at work). I have no option to choose multiple files to burn into one EPROM. If I want to do this I must join all the separate ROM files into one first. This creates a problem for me if I wanted to use 192Kbyte TOS ROMS. I imagine I would have to pad out the ROM files that are less than 256Kbytes, then join, then burn. I imagine that I am not alone, other EPROM programmer owners are probably in a similar situation?

Using the software that came with your programmer, can you leave a hole? Or does it complain?

E.G.

00000-17FFF = TOS1.00
18000-1FFFF = <nothing>
20000-3FFFF = TOS1.62
40000-5FFFF = TOS2.06
60000-7FFFF = emutos v0.8.4

What software / command did you use to split your ROMs into Hi & Low?

if you leave 'nothing' in ram that is made of bits that are 1 and 0 you already have nothing
i dont think it will bother too much
becouse when you write a file of a given size its padded by zero anyway
if you load with no clear you leave these padder zeros anyway and not cleared to FF
{FF is 256decimal or 11111111 11111111} two addressed blocks of 8 bits

it does'nt really matter much anyway if you pad it or not...
as cells are FF by default in eproms anyway till you give them null 00 or a value 00-FE or 0-255 states {256 states in total}

this is why you use no clear to FF that way the original data the roms had anyway is 'mirrored' to the address range you program

you can program just the block you want as its no matter anyway as FF is zero also.. a non programmed cell isnt an output of 1 the cell has to be weighted with electrons at programming time to close it to 1

most software will allow you too load one file at a time then flash it to a specific range in the eprom
then load another and set the min max range and do the same

the trick is not to blank check more than once
once its done and your happy read the chip back to the buffer and save it for reuse....as a 512k file if you used a 4mb eprom what programmer do you have
i use here also a willem programmer {£18 free post ebay} dual power lpt {you need an lpt port}
a nice cheep tool its software can do this easily and it supported very many ic,s

Good pics, just thought I'd point out that you can order the images manually in your post by using the 'Place inline' button after you've attached an image, or just manually typing in the bbcode:

Code: Select all

[attachment=0]pic-a.png[/attachment]
[attachment=1]pic-b.png[/attachment]
That way you can order them however you like.
tá'n poc ar buile!

if i post and upload an image it should be the first shown when posted

i get slagged for placement so its time php did also...

for ste use 100- 120ns eproms
for st use 150 - 200ns

ive had problems with ste running at 16mhz mpu speed booting from slow eproms {slower than 120ns types}

with 100 or 120 being the most reliable 90 is just a bit nippy slew...
