I've taken the plunge and ordered the SD card version, so I will look forward to using it. I put my name down for an UltraSatan last year but bottled it when I read of all the ongoing problems. Hopefully this one will be okay and further improved with each firmware update.

I have just taken the plunge and ordered one of the new batches of Ultrasatan. I came to order one of these and was told by eBay that the auction had ended. Only to find later a new auction had started the next day (or the day after that, whatever.)

I am confused now.

They do different things. This one emulate a floppy.
So if you want to have fast access (like a hard disk) and possible exchange files with PC via drag & drop, a US will be better.

To swap files, for this floppy emulator, you need to make an image and somehow populate the image on the SD card.
Not sure how you do that on a PC.

Alternatively is to use a real floppy, populate the files you want to swap, and the convert the floppy into an image.

Of course there may be some other easier way....

Interesting....
This tools creates the image from a bunch of files.
Do you have the user guide for this?

is it possible to mount a "floppy image" and use the image on Windozes?
Something like daemon tool.

-> "Create FS FLoppy": New floppy format : "Big" HD floppy (FAT12 - 127tracks, 26 Sectors, 2 sides, 500kbits/s)
-> "Create FS FLoppy": 1.68MB format Bug corrected.
-> "FAT12 Floppy": Empty sector filled with 0xE6.
-> RAW sector Extractor: AmigaDOS sector format support added.

Mmm....
So this can create a very BIG floppy.... can the Atari read this monster?
The floppy controller will have no idea of 127 tracks!!

Hello young Wong!!!!

I was just being a bit silly. When Mikro launched the first batch of Ultrasatan but I cancelled it for a variety reasons. I do have a wonderful Syquest drive which I bought of Alison and it is a wonderful device that is a pleasure to use. But since I cancelled the Ultrasatan I came to the conclusion that I had made a mistake and that I had snookered myself for moving stuff out of the Atari world into the wider world in the future. Then this floppy emulator comes along and another batch of Ultrasatans. And everything is wonderful again.

In fact the floppy controller can read "floppies" with 256 tracks, and the TOS don't limit the track number. So yes, you can build a "monster floppy" on ST ;-)
To do this, create a folder with the name "mydk.fatbigst", put your files in this folder and drag&drop it on the software. This will generate a 127 tracks /24sectors per tracks / 2 sides floppy (a ~3MB floppy).

Perhaps this has already been mentioned, put would it be possible to adapt this to external use via the external Floppy port??

Would hate to give up the internal floppy and would like to use this on multiple STs.

Yes but you need to set the internal disk drive as B: or use the emulator as B: only.

Excellent.

Are there any software/demo's that refuse to run from a B: drive or would have difficulty otherwise?

Thought there was a small piece of software for the ST that swaps A and B drives...

Would that not apply here?

I believe it is a default disk containing a program which runs on the host computer and allows you to select the disk image(s) from the SD card you want to play. It means you don't need to use the LCD and the emulator can be permanently mounted as an internal drive inside the host computer and the case closed. This is an improvement idea for stand alone floppy disk emulators I've been banging on about for years. Kudos to Jeff for once again being the first to implement such a thing.

At least one button will still be needed to switch back to the disk manager 'disk' when you're finished also for multiple disk games (to switch to the next disk). Not sure if access to the buttons on an SDCard HxC is that easy with the lid on most hosts? Perhaps there is a chance that future PCB designs or perhaps a mechanical add on can bring the control to the FDD eject button?
