What to do with non-working IC chips in general (not platform specific)?

Post by seastalker »

I have successfully repaired a leg or two on chips but always wonder what alternatives to tossing the non working chips one has in spares for all the ataris, commodores, etc. in a collection. Can bad chips get fixed and if so, is it worth the effort?

If not, anyone come up with cool art project designs out of them? :)

Broken ICs are not possible and/or worth the effort to fix, apart from possibly fixing a mechanical failure, like a broken leg.

Do a google image search for "IC necklace". You'll find lot's of inspiration! And a girl with a pokey, SID or 68030 around her neck would certainly be HOT!

Yeah, I figured. Just didn't want to find out there were pros in the world that COULD fix them and cry at the thought they couldn't reach everyone with their message. :) I'd really feel bad dumping a POKEY/SID chip in vain. I like the jewelry idea...

it was a pain to drill through though, the ceramic is tough stuff!

One thing that would indeed be cool, is a legendary chip "frozen in time", like insects in ember...

Imagine a SID or POKEY or another rarity embedded in a drop of clear epoxy as a necklace...
