Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
I can assure it is the LCD, on CRT displays the scrolling is top smooth for ST standards!

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
Once there was a time, when everybody around had a C64, but I sold my one and bought a ST.
It was not that easy to get some new games in these days and even the games that were available were slightly different from the C64 games: There was no scrolling.
But then Steve Bak created Goldrunner and now we had a game that was superior to the C64 and we were happy and proud of our ST.
But the evil commodorians told us: It’s only vertical scrolling, your computer is not able to scroll horizontal. So Steve created Return to Genesis and everybody saw that the ST could scroll into all directions.
Many thanks to Steve and Peter Lyon for the graphics as well many thanks.
Great that finally after 3 years we now play on of Steve Baks creations.
Here my first score: 41400

yes, I know, my old LCD is too slow for a such scrolling, 50 fps is too high.simonsunnyboy wrote:I can assure it is the LCD, on CRT displays the scrolling is top smooth for ST standards!
Steve Bak was a master for his first games, the scrolling were his specialty

51000, score made on my Falcon

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
71300 not a big increase
Here some tipps:
- Press Help to select a scientist you collected. You get some extra weapons. I read in the web, that there is more speed, flying through walls and more shoots. So far I only discovered the more shoots, but I will try out more
- Use the walls. The enemies aren't able to shoot through them, so use them to protect you.
- The idea of the game is to learn the route to collect all scientists in a level, so at the end of a level try to finish it fast, that prevents from loosing lives because of beeing unconcentrated

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
Yes it's the version of Dbug but the patch is not perfect, the score crash the game after the save and the explosions of ennemies doesn't work.
But I said it to CJ and GGN, so patience

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
Okay, now I spent half the weekend to get at least one of my STs to work ... spent another hour to get A_015.ST onto a DD disk ... and finally played Return to Genesis for the first time.
Terrible game ...
Maximum score so far: 1600
I guess I don't need to attach a screen shot for this score ...
Greetings Bluecher

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
Welcome to the STOT Bluecher. So finally you have a real ST for playing real Atari Games, thats great I think
Please don't give up with RTG, RTG is hard, but not unfair. It's a great shooter.
It's one of the games where you could see the difference between games in the 16 Bit era and today. In the 16 Bit era a game was hard and it took less than a minute, today a game is like a novel and took ages.

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
Which makes the old games excellent for today's use as a casual gamer
You just don't want to sit hours and hours in front of a game. But if you can play 10 rounds of a game within 30mins it has a good value for fun.
For my taste RTG is too hard but it is a technical amazing game on the ST

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
RTG seems very difficult for the first games.
But the game becomes softer after few games.
Why ?
Because some enemies have different behaviors and you know how to react to avoid their shots or to kill them.
And your brain learns the levels (the obstacles place) from habit, the game became easier.
So it's also a game of memory and not just a shooter.
Welcome Bluecher

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
Games which rely on knowing the map 1:1 are not always ok to play. Esp if you do not want to spend hours and hours playing it (which most of us do not)

The maps are very small, it's not long to learn the levels

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
I like these guys .. and their scores since it's more motivating trying to beat 3100 than 83000

I'm sure RTG will not become one of my favourites since I always fail at the same points and there are no alternative approaches. How ever, now I have my MST2 working again and I'll give RTG some more tries at the end of this week - hoping to finish Level one at least.
Greetings Bluecher
Edit 22:35: ok, I made it to 5000 ... still 5000+ to go to make it to the high score screen.

Wow, the next STOT started quickly, sorry I wasn't around to vote.
Have never played RTG before, after a few goes I have 1,800 points. Picked up 2 scientists, but do I have to take them somewhere else?

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
You must take all scientists to complete a level.
Take the manual on Guardians of the PaST (Direct Link)
It useful to know the power of scientists and the commands of this game.

Re: STOT #4/1 Return To Genesis
Thanks for the tip Xerus
Score is now 7300
Finding it fairly frustrating, often in a situation where an enemy shoots you before it has even appeared on screen, or where you are being tailed by an enemy and there is nothing you can do. It mirrors every move, and of course if you try to turn around to face it you can't dodge any bullets for while your ship transitions and that is when you get shot. I'll beat level 1 though, I only had 1 scientist to get
EDIT 19,400, eventually beat level 1
