Steem v2.4

Post by Steem Authors »

Version 2.4 of Steem is available for download. It's come much sooner than we expected but soon after the release of v2.3 Hans Härröd, one of the authors of Obsession, managed to fix the bug that stopped that great game (and also Substation, another brilliant game) from working. Also we have had many great contributions from Kimmo Hakala to fix some long standing bugs, so there are lots of programs that work now that never did before.

-- Bugs Fixed --
. Blitter halftone bug thanks to Hans Härröd (Obsession, Substation)
. Movem register mask bug thanks to Kimmo Hakala (Vodka Demo)
. Movem predecrement order bug thanks to Kimmo Hakala (Alien Storm)
. Asl.b carry bug thanks to Kimmo Hakala
. move to abs.l prefetch bug fixed with help from Kimmo Hakala (Synth Dream 2)
. Blitter NFSR bug thanks to Hans Härröd (Ecstasy demo)
. GPIP, AER and DDR emulation vastly improved (Realtime, M)
. STE sound improved (Coreflakes demo)
. Speeded up stop instruction
. JPEG screenshot extension bug fixed
. Stopped using DirectSound 7, using DirectSound 2 again
. Removed pop sound when stop
. Stopped auto fast forward on floppy access messing with normal fast forward
. Fixed timer timeout after stop bug (Test Drive)

-- New Features --
. Sound output format option
. Debug: Branch target address display
. XSteem: Sound output to stdout option ("stdout" in the sound device box)

Hope you enjoy the new version, send any suggestions/problems to steem@gmx.net

Oh yeah, I've found out what is wrong, I'm not releasing an update just for that one demo though! To get round it you can use the Psygnosis Games patch, I'll try and write a better one soon (and I'll fix it for the next version).

I'm sure there are others, but I work harder! :)

I thought we had fixed this one, but it must have only been for a brief time between versions when I last tested it. The game actually works now, but the game's menu refuses to, when you get a black screen press space and you can get it going. I'll see if I can find out what made the menu work and then what made it not work, I might be able to find the problem.

This version arrives at the right time.

I needed the last version before the MJJPARTY 2, now it's done...

I see Kimmo, my favorite "patcheman disk" ( :D ) help you too.

Eh great authors of this great emulator, at the level of the emulation's sound, do you think making some things to improve sound ?

Yes he has been a great help to us! I wish I could spot those CPU bugs like he can. :)

Oh, what's wrong with sound? There are a few small bugs that we have to look at but nothing that many people would notice. What programs have you found that have sound problems?

I use the Replicants version, and when I got the black screen, with the searchlight I see 4 "wonderfull" bombs on screen... I guess I'm gonna find and try other releases, and/or your debug build...

Another thing that doens't work anymore is the game Amberstar. It doesn't recognize disk changes and therefore you can't start the game when it says "Insert Disk C" at the beginning. I think I had this problem before but it always worked when using older TOS versions like 1.4 or 1.0.

That's strange, still works for me. Make sure you haven't accidently made the disk read-only, I remember Amberstar hates that. Also if you created the game disks with Steem there might be a problem with it detecting the format. Steem uses a .steembpb file to make sure it gets the dimentions of the disk correct after they are formatted by the ST, if you recently moved or renamed the disk image then it won't be able to find its .steembpb file. Do a search for your system for .steembpb files to see if there are any that could be meant for the Amberstar disks and move/rename them as necessary.
