FS: Capacitor replacement kits for Falcon030 motherboard and PSU.

Post by dhedberg »

Hi,

After successfully replacing all electrolytic capacitors in my Falcon030 I decided to replace the capacitors in all my Atari computers. As others seem to be interested in doing this as well I ordered some extra capacitors.

I do recommend replacing the capacitors. After checking the old motherboard capacitors with an ESR meter I would say the result was pretty convincing. About 7% of them were dead, another 11% had very high ESR values, indicating that they were close to failing. The rest of the capacitors were a mix between OK values and good values. The PSU capacitors first appeared to be OK, but when checking the ripple on the 5V and 12V rail of the PSU before and after the replacement with an oscilloscope, the improvement was great nevertheless.

If anyone is interested I have 3 sets for the Falcon030 motherboard and 3 sets for the Falcon030 PSU for sale.
All capacitors are top quality, low ESR, high ripple current. They were all purchased less than 1 week ago from Digi-Key and Farnell.

For the motherboard, the capacitors are as follows:

Panasonic FC and Rubycon ML series electrolytic capacitors
3 pcs 1uF 50V radial (replacing 1uF 50V axial electrolytic)
1 pcs 2.2uF 50V radial (replacing 2.2uF 50V axial electrolytic)
2 pcs 3.3uF 50V radial (replacing 3.3uF 50V axial electrolytic)

Panasonic FR series electrolytic capacitors
3 pcs 4.7uF 50V radial (replacing 4.7uF 25V axial)
4 pcs 10uF 50V radial (replacing 10uF 50V axial)
1 pcs 22uF 50V radial (replacing 22uF 16V axial)
6 pcs 47uF 25V radial (replacing 47uF 16V axial)
4 pcs 100uF 16V radial (replacing 100uF 16V axial)
1 pcs 220uF 6.3V radial (replacing 220uF 6.3V radial)
2 pcs 220uF 16V radial (replacing 220uF 16V axial)
1 pcs 470uF 35V radial (replacing 470uF 35V axial)
1 pcs 4700uF 16V radial (replacing 4700uF 16V axial)

For the PSU, the capacitors are as follows:

EPCOS B43504 series
1 pcs 47uF 400V radial snap-in (replacing 33uF 400V radial snap-in)

Panasonic FR series electrolytic capacitors
3 pcs 1500uF 16V radial (replacing 1000uF 16V radial)
1 pcs 680uF 25V (replacing 330uF 25V)
3 pcs 47uF 25V (replacing 22uF 25V radial and and 47uF 25V radial)

Thanks,
Daniel

I'm now all sold out. If there's still interest I would gladly order more capacitors and put together new kits, but I would rather not do it unless there is some interest. Anyone?

As more people showed interest in the capacitor kits I order a few more kits. Most of them are already sold but what I've got left is:
2 kits for the Falcon030 motherboard.
2 kits for the Falcon030 PSU.

Send me a PM if you're interested.

Thank you,
Daniel

I have no use for these capacitors as I've finished recapping all my retro-equipment so I'd hate to see them just laying around for no use.

Here's the capacitors with part-numbers (at Mouser, Farnell and Digi-Key) that I've used for the Falcon030 main board. I buy almost all my stuff from Mouser in the US, but they don't carry the complete Panasonic FR series, neither does Digi-Key and I don't know about Farnell, so to buy the complete set of capacitors that I've listed you'll have to shop around at 3 different places. Farnell may have them all (haven't checked), but they usually require you to buy a minimum quantity of at least 5 of each capacitor. Farnell however usually only sell to companies. Shipping is also fairly expensive, usually around €20. You usually get free shipping if you buy for more than €50.

Please note that all prices I've listed here is today's prices and don't include tax. The total cost if you buy all the capacitors in the list from the sources specified is €10, excluding tax and shipping.

Rubycon XYJ

3 pcs - 1uF 50V - 50YXJ1M5X11
Digi-Key: 1189-1421-ND - €0.24 / €0.72

1 pcs - 2.2uF 50V - 50YXJ2R2MTA5X11
Digi-Key: 1189-1661-1-ND - €0.22 / €0.22

2 pcs - 3.3uF 50V - 50YXJ3R3M5X11
Digi-Key: 1189-1425-ND - €0.20 / €0.40

Panasonic FR

3 pcs - 4.7uF 50V - EEU-FR1H4R7
Farnell: 2217567 - €0.19 / €0.95 (Minimum quantity 5)

4 pcs - 10uF 50V - EEU-FR1H100B
Mouser: 667-EEU-FR1H100B - €0.271 / €1.084

1 pcs - 22uF 50V - EEU-FR1H220

4 pcs - 100uF 16V - EEU-FR1C101
Mouser: 667-EEU-FR1C101 - €0.238 / €0.952

1 pcs - 220uF 6.3V - EEU-FR1C101
Farnell: 2217554 - €0.251 / €1.255 (Minimum quantity 5)

2 pcs - 220uF 16V - EEU-FR1C221

Here's the list for the Falcon030 PSU. As before, the capacitors come from different sources. In this case Mouser and Elfa. Prices are today's prices and do not include tax or shipping. Total cost if you buy all the capacitors in the list from the sources specified is about €7, excluding tax and shipping.

Panasonic FR

3 pcs - 47uF 25V - EEU-FR1E470
Mouser: 667-EEU-FR1E470 - €0.271 / €0.813

1 pcs - 680uF 25V - EEU-FR1E681LB
Mouser: 667-EEU-FR1E681LB - €0.705 / €0.705

3 pcs - 1500uF 16V - EEU-FR1C152LB
Mouser: 667-EEU-FR1C152LB - €1.02 / €3.06

EPCOS B43504

Why do you use a different form factor for most of the capacitors? Most are available in axial, too, albeit some have to be switched to a slightly higher voltage. I haven't bought them yet, but Reichelt has the following. Prices are including tax, without shipping.

Code: Select all

For the motherboard, the capacitors are as follows:

3 pcs (replacing 1uF 50V axial electrolytic) AX 1/63 0,24EUR
1 pcs (replacing 2.2uF 50V axial electrolytic) AX 2,2/63 or RAD FC 2,2/50 0,13EUR
2 pcs (replacing 3.3uF 50V axial electrolytic) TON 3,3/63 0,42EUR or RAD FC 3,3/50 0,14EUR

3 pcs (replacing 4.7uF 25V axial) AX 4,7/63 0,18EUR
4 pcs (replacing 10uF 50V axial) AX 105 10/50 0,23EUR
1 pcs (replacing 22uF 16V axial) AX 105 22/50 0,24EUR
6 pcs (replacing 47uF 16V axial) AX 105 47/50 0,26EUR
4 pcs (replacing 100uF 16V axial) AX 105 100/16 0,28EUR
1 pcs (replacing 220uF 6.3V radial) NHG-A 220U 6,3 0,10EUR
2 pcs (replacing 220uF 16V axial) AX 220/16 0,27EUR
1 pcs (replacing 470uF 35V axial) AX 470/40 0,68EUR
1 pcs (replacing 4700uF 16V axial) AX 4700/16 0,67EUR

Personal preference. I like the Panasonic FR seriers of electrolytic capacitors. The specifications are very good and they are not too expensive. I've used them in a lot of projects and not a single one has ever failed on me. I value reliability.

In general, axial capacitors matching the specifications of the Panasonic FR capacitors cost a lot more (probably because they are not as common anymore due to the space they require on the boards). If you found good axial capacitors that you're happy with I'd say go! Anything is going to be better than the 25+ year old ones you're replacing.

Hey dhedberg, I noticed that I 'inspired' you to re-cap in the first place (http://atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 6&p=320487) Just wondering why you didn't use Poly type caps when possible like I did?

Yes you did! :-)

At the time I'd been having problems with resets on one of my Falcons for quite some time. I knew a common reason for that was dried up caps in the reset circuitry. Your post gave me the final motivation I needed to go ahead and actually replace them all! I did use film capacitors for the 1uF, 2.2uF and 3.3uF caps in one of my Falcons, but as they're pretty expensive, and they're all electrolytic caps from the beginning I decided to use only electrolytic caps in my other Falcon. Thanks for your inspiring posts!

What would be a fair price to have someone do the motherboard recap for you? I am NOT offering to do it. I would probably kill the board!
But just in general, what would be a fair price for such a service?

If someone sent me the board and caps I'd probably ask 20€ + shipping back. And no, can't take orders now. I'm fully booked until end of summer.

I think I found a person that will recap any ST motherboard, including parts, for $65usd plus $15 return shipping. Is that too much? They are on the USA east coast, so good for the us American fans. I am not sure what quality of parts they use. Still awaiting that info back from them about that. Also awaiting notice if they would to Mega/MSTE/TT/Falcons. But they guaranty their work for ST's. They also say they fix lifted solder pads. And best of all they will soon offer PSU recaps too.
I do not want to endorse this service yet until I learn more about this. Once I get some info back, I might send a STFM to them for a test. I'll let you all know more as I find get it.
Note: Unfortunately ;) they also offer Mac recap services too.
