"Wings of Death" Remake

Post by AtariFan »

Hi,

"Blazing Wings" will be a PC remake of "Wings Of Death", an Atari STe game developed by Eclipse Software and published by Thalion.

The remake uses a doubled resolution with filtered graphics and remade digital voices. The original game will be remade with Game Maker.

The developer is looking for someone doing the soundtrack.

It's WIP and the website offers some images and two demo videos at the moment.

http://www.blazingwings.fr.tc/

Hopefully this is not one of those projects which never get finished.

I'm sure there's the complete album in MP3 format over at the Cyclone / X-Troll site

edit:  that's the Lethal Xcess one.

Only Mp3 track I got is the Wings Of Death one off the Mad Max album. The one with the bloody awful "Bittner Rap" on it

Hello,

It's Aligarion, the webmaster of http://www.amigachapterone.com , who will create this remake

I know Aligarion thinks Wings of Death is the best shoot on Atari ST

Hi,

As Rodi explained it, I am a great fan of both Atari STe and Amiga versions of Wings of Death, and Blazing Wings will be a tribute to both versions.

For the moment, the first level has been ripped (background + Sprites), filtered and remade with Game Maker.
Four out of five weapons have been created identical (or nearly) to Wings of Death, but I had some problems with Thunder Balls, so I decided to replace it with Thunder Blades, which was easier to create.

What I have to do to complete the first level and release a demo is :

- working on gameplay (player speed, enemies health, etc...).
- working on the boss (path, weapons).
- creating full credits to Wings of Death Eclipse and Thalion fabulous teams.
- creating remade digital voices (will be made by somebody else).

For the moment, the soundtrack is taken from the Amiga game, (but the Atari STe soundtracks are great too  ) but my wish is to provide remixed soundtracks with modern instruments (electric guitar, etc...).

I will give you feedback from time to time... :)

Ali.

Best of luck .. from the video clips I've downloaded, it looks like it's gonna be a good one to watch out for.

Very well done .. and bloody hard!

My only criticism would be the level of difficulty .. maybe an easy (for me!), medium and hard mode?

Thanx. :D

Yeah, it's a bit harder than the original, but the Wings of Death level was way too easy. I wont increase the difficulty too much for next levels (even if the game definitely deserves a better challenge).

I'm in contact with him, I'll do the job :).

He contacted me via my website because I already remixed the title theme some months ago and he liked it.

Actually I'll rework the title theme a bit to give it some more quality, after that, I'll start with levels one and two.

*spam* my remix is here: http://www.nilsschneider.de/tracks/nils ... _theme.mp3

No problem, it's a lot of fun for me ;)

Usually I create trance tunes, it's nice to work on something else.

How fast I can be depends on if I can get YMagic from somewhere to convert the tunes to midi files (I've got an ym for every level here).

If I have to play every tune note by note it will take some time to get all tunes finished. I'll start with level 1 today I think (at the moment I'm at work)

I've got a version of the level 1 music:

http://namenotfound404.no-ip.com/tracks ... evel01.mp3

The ending sounds strange, but this is because the whole track will be looped in the game. I have to talk with Christophe (Aligarion) about how it will be done.

Thanks to Gerald from The Thalion Source for the midi, it helped a lot!

EDIT:

I would better call it "cover" than remix, because except for the drums, nearly all instruments are taken from the original. But I'll do it this way for all levels because I want the tracks to sound like the original, but with modern instruments (otherwise it wouldn't be a "remake").

Level 2 will get other drums though I think...

Nils, IT IS WONDERFUL, Great Job ! I love it !!!! :D

In the game, it rocks !!!! :D :D :D

****

I know what makes the launching of the game so slow : It is because of the size of MP3 files, I'll have to modify the "kbps" to 128 then try to convert them to .rbs files (1 or 2 Mo each).

Thanks for listening ;)

Then let me send you 128kbit files instead, because I'll generate them from the wave files then. If you convert an mp3 to an mp3, you'll lose a lot of sound quality.

Why is the start slow at all? Does the "game maker (whatever it is)" decompress the whole file before it is being played?

The program should *stream* the files while playing them back from the harddisk, that's what should be done. If possible, try to use this method instead.

Thanks for making it, I have always dreamt of a remix (cover ?) of these tunes. :D

OK send me both version (192 and 128) : 192 for my personnal use and 128 for the game, if you can.

Forgot to answer that :

Don't let some "blank space" at the end of the tune, the loop is done automatically in Game Maker. :D

If you could brutally stop the tune at the end, it would be fine.

Leave the last soft notes at the end.

Remake of the STe version + remixes of STe soundtracks = it sounds "ST related", but I understand it is not pure ST.

New version for level 1, a lot more atmosphere is in it now I think. I like especially the part after 1:43 8)

http://nilsschneider.de/tracks/nils_sch ... evel01.mp3 192kbit 8)

128kbit/cutted version comes when it's final (one or two days I guess...)

Atmospheric is the word, again you did a great job. :D

I am gonna keep both version for my personnal musical enjoyment.

Thank you Nils !!!! :D

PS : I think I can store mp3s in a folder and access them via the executable. I just need to register my version of Game Maker to make the script works (I am waiting for the activation code).

If it works, there won't be any space restriction. :D

In the futur, I could use this method on graphics too to obtain an executable as slim as possible with instantaneous launching. :D :D

EDIT : The electric guitar part is awesome, just how I dreamt it... :D
