Have to wait and see until near the end of the auction this coming weekend.
We can (if we lose due to silly prices) ask the buyer if he'll consider a donation towards the disks to enable preservation.

Was hoping to keep it under the £150 max (I mean absolute maximum) ..
and that was based on my selling of 2 x h/drives to someone in work .. but they've since pulled out of the deal until after our payday (24th!) .. so max I can go for (on my own) is £80.
The problem with it being one week before payday
A week after and I would have gone £150 with no probs at all. I can live without blank DVDrs etc for a few weeks

Does seem a little steep .. as I've said in previous posts, contact the winner if we don't and see if we can donate some cash towards the final price for the disks they don't want (assuming they're bidding on the Mega STE only).

Why not have muguk do the bidding, and anyone interested in contributing a bit of money post here so he knows a price range that all of us pooled together could reach. That way all equip and disks stay within the community.
muguk, do you have a paypal account, or can you create one?
I'd go in for 20 - 25 US Dollars.
I have no need for any of the hardware/disks - downloaded images work just as well

I don't have PayPal for credit-rating reasons my bank won't forgive me for previous mistakes and therefore won't let me have credit/debit cards - best left at that until I can get a better job - or win the lottery
But a good idea all the same. Can only think of Western Union at the mo as the only way overseas can help - but got to win it first. Don't think the seller will accept a post-dated cheque until after 24th
We've got until Saturday at latest before I start bidding as the price is high enough as it stands.

Same here .. really don't understand why people get into a bidding frenzy when there's oodles of time left.

One of the main reasons for bidding early is to avoid the last minute bidding frenzy.
Think of it as running a marathon effect, if you bid early with a really
high bid you have control of the pace, ie: put a high bid in, people who try to follow will push the target up, the people who aren't up with the pace will look at the target price & say thats beyond my budget & won't even bother bidding which means more of a chance of winning as there's less competition at the final sprint !!!
hope that makes sense !!
There ends my lesson in psycology

One way of making sure you win ..
That item is only worth £10 in the shops .. I'll bid £100 to make sure no-one else can get there.
One sure fire way to get the item in the end.
Let's hope the ceiling on this item is not "up there with the gods" otherwise we're all going to get stuffed at the last hurdle.

Right . have emailed the seller asking him if I can make 2 payments .. one as a deposit and the rest on collection (which will be after payday!) .. if he says OK to that (and we win) then I don't mind bidding that little bit higher on behalf of everyone here.
I'll then flog the various bits that have been requested by interested parties to lessen my outlay.
Might even flog my MegaST to someone else if I win as it'd be nice to play with a MegaSTE for a change.
But not much point planning until Sunday when the auction nears the close and the seller is OK with my plan.

He's fine with a deposit and then remainder of payment upon collection.
Have also asked if he'd like us to do something in memory of his uncle when the collection is mastered on CD-ROMs etc. But will put that to the vote in here when we're in position to start imaging all the disks.
Again, as previously mentioned, this will only occur if we win - got to keep outlining this bit - someone else could be very determined, just as much as we are, to get this collection. OK, we're in it as a collective but someone else could be just as much an Atari fan as the sellers late uncle was.
I'm only guessing, but a quick search for "dr mark palmer" +atari on google gave us this page - http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:tJ ... tari&hl=en (had to use Google cache as page not found on real server)
Quote: "Mark Palmer has just completed three years as an AHRB Fellow in the Creative and Performing Arts at Staffordshire University. His use of computers dates back to the early nineties when he used an Atari for CAD/CAM and the design of installations. "

That and about another 100+ CD32 discs .. most are ISOs and a few are pre-burns. Mate up in Llandudno tests them on his half-dozen different Amiga set-ups
