Identify this cart

Post by Robson »

Hi,

The question is: What is this cart and what for?

This one has been with me for a while now, and definitely came with an ST. I tried finally with an STFM yesterday and nothing happened when booted up the computer.

I guess it is either faulty or a software dongle.

Thanks.

Is there anything around the sides/edges?

Have you tried to look inside?

Nothing just a writing with pen on the other side (It says "P336" - not relevant I think).
I did not open it (seems glued together). Definitely no screw.

you may need to create the desktop icon for it, so you can see if it contains any files, you just need to creata new icon with the letter 'c' NOTE that it needs to be lowercase c and not a capital C
then double click it and see if it contains files. It's probably just a dongle for something though, so may not have a file system.

The logo on the cart looks very familiar, I'm sure I've seen it in some advertising on some early ST magazines.

I couldn't install new icon, option is inactive, but managed to get the content.
I'm not any closer I guess.

I have a full set of STFormat...maybe it's time to go through them.

Good find, I think you're on the right track, that article is from ST Format 3 October 89, page 106

I would look at early ST User mags, might pre-date the first ST Formats

Ahh, I've just seen this...looks like it is the real deal. It's shame that the dump is missing. I have millions of disks with midi stuff in my loft to check.

I did a quick search and couldn't find the disk.

Thanks very much for all your help. One day somebody might post the disk image.

Well done Qazuio, I am a bit late but I knew I had seen those symbols somewhere before, it turns out I had seen them in an advert for Virtuoso in the back of R.A Penfold's Computers and Music.

Yes, hopefully, so we can see it working, and maybe see how complex the dongle is?

Looks like it has some KCS Omega overtones, written in machine code, load/save operations in background.
No score editing though:-(

I found quite a few decent images pertaining to Virtuoso on flickr by doing a Google image search, including one of the disk titled "TDM - Virtuoso v1.12" dated 2010, perhaps you could inquire if he still has the disk and is willing and able to copy it for you.
