Your first videogame ever?

Post by Retrogamer_ST »

When did you watch your first videogame ever in action?

I think it was 1974 or 1975 when i watched the first videogame ever in action. It was Pong on a new arcade machine in a smaller restaurant in a neighbouring city. I had never seen anything like it in my life. Two white lines and a small square that bounced forward and back between the lines when the kids was playing.

I thought, WOW, what a cool TV.

Then it took a year or two before two of my friends bought themselves a pong console. From now on i was addicted to videogames. ;)

1979 i got my first own console, a Fairchild Channel F. Unlike my friends Pong machines you could buy games on cartridges to this beauty of console.

When running a BASIC game that we had typed from a manual on my friend's VIC-20 in early 80's...

It was Pac Man on the Atari 2600 game console, the classic one with the brown wooden design.

I remember good ol' Atari VCS 2600. ;)

The first time i saw Pac Man was in the cafeteria of a local gas station early 80's on a brand new arcade machine. This was a new experience unlike anything i had watched earlier. I inserted a coin to play a game of Pac Man. Hmmm, what to do here? It took a few coins before i got the hang of how to play this new game. :D

An Arcade style racing game at the BMW museum in Munich, Bavaria in 1985 or 1986.

At home, that place is filled with Starglider in 1987 as my brother run a copy in the family living room on the then brand new 520STM.

The first game i ever watched on ZX Spectrum was Sabre Wulf when a friend bought himself a ZX Spectrum. We always mocked him for buying a ZX Spectrum and not a Vic 20 like the rest of us. We never told him that ZX Spectrum was a better computer.

No, it had a road and cockpit style perspective with vector graphics IIRC.

I see.

This one was very simple and one of the first driving games from Atari. I don't think that features as scrolling graphics even was possible at that time. This arcade machine from Atari was quite common in Sweden and i played it a lot. It even contained oil slicks to ruin your best time.

I bought drag racing for my Fairchild Channel F and it was like this...

Race from left to right until you reach the end of the screen, repeat.

That's driving before scrolling graphics was possible or even invented. ;)

I distinctly remember it. It was a Pole Position arcade machine, which sat all on it's own in a dark corner of the Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth - of all places! I must have been about 5 years old. I remember just watching it without any coins, until my gran gave me some money to have a few plays on it. I absolutely loved it, and couldn't believe my luck when I got a 2nd hand 2600jr a few years later, and found Pole Position amongst the cartridges thrown in with it.

Still play PP now :)

The first game I remember was a platform game called 'lock and key', painstakingly hand typed from a magazine on to my Sinclair QL. Still have the QL and the magazine I think somewhere.

It was either Centipede or Pole Position on the 2600. Not long after it was a Vic20 with a whole bundle of games, Frogger being a particular favourite.

Does Pong count as videogame :) That was the first on my television I ever played.
An ugly orange case with 2 paddles on it.

The first real arcade: I guess it was Pacman at the local snackbar, but for me its long time ago
to remember exactly the first arcade ever...

Awww, OK! So we know that AF is full of youngsters, hehe!
My first videogame was an Odyssey, so I won't tell you WHEN!

Other than this, I think I didn't see an arcade cabinet earlier than the '80s, since this kind of stuff always came late in Italy

But in the meanwhile I got a VIC20, the first videogame there was a type-in "Missile vs Meteor" that was in the manual, but I immediately bought three cartridges... hmmm... jupiter lander, ... the car chasing game in the labirynth clone (rat race?) with the "three blind mice" tune, ... and I can't remember the other one.

And now, GET OFF MY LAWN!

I had one of those units, too! Had six games including Pong, and it was made by Binatone. Mine had a light gun too, for playing "skeets" (shooting game). I remember feeling put out when I discovered my then friend had one with colour output, grrr...

Edit: Ah yes, here it is: http://www.childofthe1980s.com/2008/10/ ... tv-master/. Binatone TV Master.

Just discovered the light gun doesn't work unless you have a CRT TV. Bugger, was going to buy one for old time's sake too.. :(

Probably either Xenon 2, Black Lamp, Wizball, Arkanoid 2, Garfield or Jumping Jackson possibly even Noddys Playtime(whatever my mum put on when she first let me play)
