Kid friendly ST games

Post by darklight »

I showed my kids a few games I liked playing when I was young - they seem to have latched onto Prince of Persia and are loving playing that. What other games are fairly simple to control and reasonably chilled / not too hard? I'm thinking Zool is another good one. Bubble Bobble and Rainbow islands I think are a bit too fast in places for my kids at the moment - got to start them on something easier!

I guess to qualify what I'm looking for is:
  • Simple controls & rules
  • Hard to die, so no death when touching enemies etc
  • No gore / violence
  • Extra points for cutesy graphics or no weapons
  • I'm guessing only platformers will pass the simple controls & rules rule, but open to suggestions
Storm Clouds over the Western Front - my WW1 2D dogfighting game for windows
2D Flight Sims - side scrolling aerial combat games

Well, you can try our game, we just released: Whack A Virus. You do need mono monitor, tho. (or mono screen in emulator)... Should be easy enough and no gore, etc. We had kids in mind, so kids level mode starts slow... http://yescrew.atari.org

Funny, back in the 90's i knew a family where the kids couldn't play Prince of Persia, because it was too violent.
I think the "fall on spikes" death was part of this decision. ;)
Also controls in this game aren't the most easy, imo. :D

But well, it's a great game, so if they are and you are okay with this, cool that they are playing it. :)

And for (advised) suggestions, but not much on the "no death for touching enemies" point:

I played a lot of North and South with my brothers. We were 8-13 years old I guess, it was a fun quick game.
http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... 22380.html

We also played a kind of D&D game called Chaos. This PD version was a remake of the Spectrum game by Julian Gollop.
The PD remake by Martin Brownlow is full of samples from British comedy of the 1970-1990s, which made it.

I too remember enjoying it, but looking at it through 2020 eyes I’m not sure it’s the most politically correct of games....

Hey Anthony! Hope you're well mate.
I did think that initially but have watched a walk through and there wasn't anything too sinister, apart from tickling a photographers bottom!
Another fun game was Dynablaster.

Postman Pat - http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... 10271.html
Hong Kong Phooey - http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... 21525.html
Scooby Doo - http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... 11168.html
Probably loads of Teque/Hitec Games.

I suppose Lemmings but that does contain a certain amount of peril.
Still got, still working: Atari 4Mb STe, 520STFM, 2.5Mb STF.
Hardware: Cumana CSA 354, Ultimate Ripper, Blitz Turbo, Synchro Express II (US and UK Versions).

Thanks all for the suggestions. Yes I think Lemmings is out because it requires mouse and pretty pinpoint mouse sometimes too. Dizzy, Dynablasters are good suggestions. I also like Boulder Dash because it has puzzle elements to it - good to get their brains working! There are quite a few games in these lists that I've never seen before (never being a fan of many of these sorts of game in the past myself) - so I will have to get into it and figure out what is good.

Potentially kid friendly:
- Baby Jo: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... _8643.html
- Bug Bash: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... 25177.html
- Dot 2 Dot: http://www.atarimania.com/list_games_at ... ._S_G.html
- Color Clash: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... 31254.html
- Rockfall: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... 10426.html
- Klatrix: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... _9752.html
- Chu Chu Rocket: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... 21884.html

Multiplayer player games could also be great, at least when your kinds are old. Here are few driving ones:
- SuperSprint: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... 11467.html
- Ironman's Offroad: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... _9662.html
- Jupiter's Masterdrive: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st ... _9709.html

(For smaller kids first two may be better as screen doesn't scroll.)

I would also recommend some program for producing sound, they're a lot of fun. If you have any MIDI instruments, or can use e.g. soft synthetizer on PC through MIDI, I would recommend either MIDI Mouse, or MIDI Square.

For Atari Falcon I would recommend AceTracker. Set it up and demonstrate how the kids can change sounds, and let them play with the keyboard.

Carvup would also appeal to kids, though it might be a bit complicated for younger children

Two possibilities that come to mind are Kid GP and Blob Race. Silly and fun plus our daughter loves em :)
