Whack a Virus! Official release

Post by SweYC »

Hi, a while ago we released Sommarhack edition of Whack a Virus game. Now some
bugs were fixed, game is polished and ready as proper release, so here it is and i
hope you will enjoy it! You can get it from our pages (yescrew.atari.org) where all
fixes or changes will also appear, or bellow as attachmens. There is ZIP which can
be copied to flopppy or hard drive and also an ST image. Enjoy!

WHACK A VIRUS!
whackem-net.png

Whack a Virus! is a small whackamole type of game. The main motive behind it
is having fun! And what can be more fun in these times, then to whack some bad
viruses! Game will run on all ATARI machines capable of displaying ST Mono
resolution and atleast 1Mb of free RAM. Including Falcon030 and TT on VGA or
real ST Mono monitors. On Falcon and TT with VGA monitors, game will setup
ST Mono automaticaly. On TT exit to TOS does not restore resolution correctly, yet!
Runs on CT60 and MiNT/Geneva as well. Could not test on Magic. If you have CRT,
use it. Its a lot smoother as any of LCDs i have!

GAMEPLAY:

Gameplay is quite straightforward. You use the numpad keys from 1 to 9 which
represent 9 virus screen's in the game field. As soon as a virus appears in
one of them, it is analyzed and it's info is displayed in the info panel. It
can be found in the bottom right part of the screen. There you can see the
virus data, damage levels and other informations about it. You need to hit the
virus, using the numpad keys before it slides back down! If you hit the virus
the score will increase and if you miss it, it will cause some damage dropping
your life energy. As soon as the life energy reaches zero, the game is over
Also, if you hit the wrong screen, the life energy will drop by 20%! So, it is
not good to whack all around!!!

Sometimes a pill will appear. By catching the pill, you can get some bonuses
to make your fight against the viruses easier. It can close screen (1, 2 or 3)
but only till the next wave of viruses. Or it can add 20% to your life energy
or decrease speed. Higher levels offer more pills. There are NO PILLS in the
FRANTIC mode! More in README file.

I think, that ST-Mono/Hires resolution (high res, stable and sharp picture)
is very underrated, so I decided to make game especially for the ST-Mono res
At this point I must thank MiC/Dune a lot, for contacting me, and for making
this really awesome graphics! And also, for many good suggestions about games
in general. Same big thanks goes also to Dma-SC/Sector One for great music!
It fits the game perfectly! Also thanks to gWem for SNDH wrapper, GGN/KUA for
some really useful hints, and to StCooper/PDZ for support.. And thanks to all
still active (new and old) members of the scene, for all the support and care
over all these years! THANK YOU!

I was not able to test game much, so please, if there are any serious bugs
or problems, please report therm to me: (janez dot valant at amis dot net)

And last, but not least:

Graphics by MiC/Dune - as always, fantastic job!
Musics by Dma-Sc/SCT1 - as always, great music!

Thank you guys!

Now, was that due to the game itself or due to the two amazing game reviewers from New Beat? :D

The only sensible thing is to add some STING networking code and an online hiscore table.
Ain't no space like PeP-space.

Love it,loads of fun on the Falcon :)
Filled up higscore table pretty fast ..hehe..hardest to get scores in normal level oddly enogh, have to have a go again to test that.
Do like the system friendliness, one only drawback tho on Falcon with VGA crt, palette is not saved so I get a too bright mono screen at exit.
I use rather greyish style palette to get more of a real mono monitor feel to it.

For those with no falcons, with VGA screen the mono mode is actually hardware emulated via the palette registers giving the fun thing of choosing any colour style for it.

This is odd, pallete is saved and restored on exit. The emulated mode have colors a bit mixed up. When mode is changed to VGA mono via vsetmode() pictures is red on white, so i swap color 2. If there would be no restore, screen colors would be wrong on exit....

I tried the latest ST image you uploaded. The only problem I have is when the game attempts to exit to the Desktop. I only have Hatari since original hardware is getting more rare and expensive in the USA. I am using a UK version of 1.04.

The first version attempted to exit to the desktop but the nine blocks were still flashing. The latest version does not do that, but the desktop flashes and the drives never appear.

I have no problem playing the game itself. The ability to remap the keys was very helpful to me since my keyboard does not have a numeric keypad so I selected different numbers that made more sense to me.

Hi, Yes exit on TOS 1.00 and 1.04 is problematic, and it does elude me atm. I got reports that all is ok, and later i got feedbacks of low TOS versions problem and also small problem on TT when app is exiting. Currently im lacking time, but i plan to get deeper into that. Thanx for report!

I would suggest you use STE emulation and TOS 1.62 or 2.00 on emulators anyway, because it also play sampled sounds then.

Same, both black and white gets min and maxed when back in 2col/80colm/no double line.Aswell as in 16cols,whole palette gets standard values. And remembered now that quite many games and some programs do that.
Had a quick test how my old donkey jr does and realized that even if get back proper tone to the screen after exit, the palette in control panel actually says that values are max/min,even if actual cols are back. Some funny AES/VDI thing maybe?
Well no biggie really to reload palette but now I got interested in what the cause for it might be.
