Thieves Guild (BBS game by telnet)

Post by DarkLord »

Finally got around to trying the front-end for this game.

It does work, across telnet, with the game installed on my BBS.

Graphics and sounds. It reminds me a bit of "The Bards Tale".

From the emulator, you have to pick "Online" then type in the
usual "atdt xxxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx,23" and then it will connect.

Here are a couple of pictures:

Thieves Guild02.JPG
and here is the software:

Have fun! :)

Great, glad to see someone got it working.

Wish I could get it to work myself! I will have to try d/ling the version you're using.

Did you run it on genuine hardware, or in Hatari?

I posted more or less the same message on DF, but even using the version of the front-end which you supplied here, I am unable to get it to work all the way.

I can connect to the BBS using "Online" mode, and I can launch the TG door... but the front end never recognizes that I've launched the game, and no graphics or sound effects ever pop up.

Very disappointed. There must be some modem signal or something that isn't working, either in TCPSER or in Hatari.

This was using real hardware (in other words, my highly modified Atari STacy).

Man, bummer that you can't get it to work. Hmm, I wonder what the problem is.

Have you tried it from there on any real ST's?

Alas, I have not. I don't have access to any real STs. Maybe someday down the road.

I'm going on vacation soon, so I'll just have to leave it for the time being.

FWIW, using my CosmosEx, I made a quick first attempt to record a session of Thieves Guild. I spent a lot of time trying to get the "Thieves Guild Emulator" (graphical front-end client) to work in Hatari, but ultimately it required genuine hardware. You can see the video and read the story of my quixotic quest here:

http://breakintochat.com/blog/2014/11/1 ... ves-guild/

Also, here's a description of the TG Emulator from an old 1993 Atari Explorer Online issue:
TG_EMUL is the Thieves' Guild emulator by Herb Flower and Robert Fletcher. Thieves' Guild is an excellent door game for your BBS. It creates for you a world of Ancient Legends, Powerful Wizards, Mysterious Magic, Valiant Knights, Glamorous Treasures and Quests, but most of all, a cunning world of Thievery! (See THIEVES in this category for the complete description.) When you use this program you will not only be able to play the game (as you did with just the THIEVES archive) but you will then be able to play the game with excellent Graphics, Animation, Sound, and increased Speed. If you want to play THIEVES, I recommend this file to you as well. Docs included. 649K uncompressed.
I'm going to be writing more about this game, and about other BBS games with front-end clients, in the near future.

Paul Witte, the author of the original Thieves Guild door game, has been
in contact with me.

I forwarded links to this message thread and your blog to him. :)

The first time he e-mailed me, he said that, like you, he was trying to play it
under emulation. He was also looking for pictures and any video's. I sent him
what pics I had, and the link to your blog so hopefully he'll see that video.

He had sent me some links to some MMO work he's doing at the moment:

Pretty cool looking stuff! :)

I just updated this blog post with a new video. This time the video includes sound effects as well as combat animation (surprisingly bloody).

I continue to be impressed with the amount of detail in this game client. To give just two examples:

* At the title screen, there is a torch flickering. If you let the computer sit and the title screen, the fire will slowly burn up the "Thieves Guild" banner across the top of the screen.

* Sometimes the game tells you (in text) that it has begun to rain. If you have a combat interaction after this, animated rain is superimposed over the combat graphics.

Although I have played off and on for six months, I still haven't gotten very far in this game. There are a couple reasons:

First, you have a limited number of turns and time each day, which was common back then. BBSes typically had just one phone line, so if someone was using the BBS, nobody else could connect. SysOps had to limit each user's time per day.

Second, if you go on vacation, or life occupies you with something else for a week or two, your character is likely to be deleted. Then you have to start all over again.

Anyway, I hope to keep at this game and really find some of its secrets. It seems to be much bigger than you might expect. Maybe some of you all might like to try playing, too!

Nice. I posted this over at AtariAge, but I'll post it here. I always thinks its uber-cool
to re-establish contact with the people that made or wrote things that have been
influential, Atari wise.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Will you do me a favor and let Josh know how much I appreciate his blog
post & video? We've really enjoyed the memories it brought back. For
some reason my emails to him are bouncing (his server it seems is
failing to do the reverse DNS lookup on my email server's IP address).

Thanks,

Paul Witte
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:Also, in an earlier e-mail, Paul Witte mentioned this:

"The sequence at the very end of the game is pretty cool, and I wonder if anyone ever saw it."

I haven't, but now he's got my curiosity up. Anyone else seen it?

Josh is absolutely right about how difficult it it sometimes to play
BBS/board games. If you don't play them consistently, your character
might get deleted. Time played and turns taken are often times,
limiting factors. Some games reset themselves monthly as well.

Still, there are several notable games that are great, and well
worth the time invested in them.

Just watched your updated video. Cool stuff. Loved it when you tried to steal
from the tavern! Sorry about your luck though. :)
