list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
hello !
I remember 20 years ago when i got a ST, one of my friend had a midi keyboard (Roland D50 or Yamaha DX7, i don't know i'm a noob in this domain, i think that was a D50).
One day, he show me on the ST an Adventure Game by Sierra, i think that was a King Quest, maybe the 1st one of the serie but i'm not certain about it.
Anyway, in the options of the game there was the possibility to plug the game to a midi keyboard and to ear the midi sound of the game thru the speakers on the synth in MIDI with the quality sound of the synth !
At that time, it was quiet amazing !
Unfortunately, i can't find any info or videos on google & youtube about that. I also like to know if it was the only game with that option or if you know about some similar games with MIDI soundtrack.
Thank you for your help !

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
From memory all (or almost all) the Sierra games had MIDI support. There was a separate program on the disk which did all the MIDI work.

Really? I need to check these out. I have a Roland Juno G so the sounds should be lush
STE: Desktopper case, IDE interface, UltraSatan (8GB + 512Mb) + HXC floppy emulator. Plus some STE's/STFM's
Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
Cruise for a Corpse uses MIDI sound, specially the MT-32.
I think ST-Karate utilizes the MIDI too !

I am pretty sure that The Karate Kid 2 could use midi as well.

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
I remember trying (and failing) to put a MIDI recorder / output grabber tool into the loop from STEEM to the MIDI sound-card and it failing miserably. Has anyone else tried this and successfully grabbed (in MIDI format) the tunes from the games above (i.e. for those where it wasn't left on the disk as a .MID file)?
I do a similar thing when ripping music from Nintendo DS games. Extract the Nintendo-proprietary files, extract into MIDI and soundset files, then convert them into Impulse Trackers files. But I've never succeeded with an ST MIDI track

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
I have done a midi recording of the Karate Kid 2 music (see attachment).
It is saved in both SMF0 and SMF1 format, and also i edited one to sound good on Yamaha XG devices (MU90 or above) i followed the instructions written in the manual when i did the edit ("set channels 1-4 to vibraphone, synth strings, bass and brass--- or similar intruments.")
The music was made for Casio CZ101.

I'd just use two Ataris:Mug UK wrote:I remember trying (and failing) to put a MIDI recorder / output grabber tool into the loop from STEEM to the MIDI sound-card and it failing miserably. Set first machine up with Cubase
Connect The MIDI IN on this machine to the MIDI out of Atari 2
Set Cubase to automatically start recording when it receives a MIDI signal
Start game on Atari 2

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
Never thought of ripping them like that .. a hardware approach to the same method I was attempting I guess

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
I did the Karate Kid 2 recording using STEEM... with "midi in" connected to "midi out" on my (USB) soundcard and recorded with XGworks... there are a couple of empty seconds in the beginnings of the recording as i have no idea how to setup XGworks to start record first when midi signal is recived.

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
Hmmm .. that's got me thinking
Help out someone who's knowledge of MIDI stuff is sparse and do some idiot-proof screenshots of how you've got it set-up. I'd like to give it a try. I think Impulse Tracker can record MIDI in ..
If not, whatever I use to record the MIDI data, I can then bung it through Impulse Tracker afterwards *but* where / how do I get the sample bank data? Thinking of attempting Sapiens as a test as would like to listen to that (ooh and Eco!)

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
BTW If somebody wants tracks from Sierra adventures there is an archive at QuestStudios. There are MIDI files for both MT-32 and GM.

Do your soundcard have midi ports?Mug UK wrote: Help out someone who's knowledge of MIDI stuff is sparse and do some idiot-proof screenshots of how you've got it set-up. I'd like to give it a try. I think Impulse Tracker can record MIDI in ..

There is no sample data in the midi output... just midi messages. for "Karate Kid 2" sounds so are they mentioned in the manual, just add the following instruments in the impusle tracker file "Vibraphone, synth strings, bass and brass".
Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
Here is a screenshot showing the MIDI setup in Sapiens:
The "Casio CZ" (A mode) is probably the best version as the music uses its presets.
the "B mode" is for any other synths that have 3 part multitimbral... just choose your own sounds until it sound good i guess
The "C mode" is for monotimbral synths (example DX7 as mentioned) and needs a polyphony of atleast 3 (DX7 has 16 maximum).

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
I have uploaded a youtube "video" (actually screenshots only) playing the third option i Sapiens using my MU1000 wich has a DX plugin card for pure DX7 FM sounds

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
Uploaded an "Albedo" gameplay video to youtube... midi sound using Yamaha MU1000 and also i connected the Atari ST sound output (for soundeffects) to the A/D input of the MU1000 for various DSP effects like reverb and chorus.

Is there an english version of the game also?

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
Thank you Stefan JL for posting those Midi Tracks of Sapiens ! They are amazing !
That was my favorite game with archipelagos.
It would be so great to put on youtube all those great midi soundtracks available on the ST, to show to those Amiga Fellows that Only Atari Makes it possible & makes it Happens, like they said in that video :

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
Added a "ST Karate" video with midi music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVTBbsNOlhE
There was no info on wich synth to use but midi data was only on channel one... for monotimbral synths then, but does of course work on multitimbral ones also as long they can recive midi messages on channel 1 (probably not work with Roland MT-32?).
I used my Yamaha MU1000 (again) and choosed a "short sound" as otherwise there will be stuck notes
BTW "ST Karate" was made by Steve Kelly and Eric Matthews (The Bitmap Brothers)

Re: list of all ST games using MIDI Sound
It is possible to set MT-32 to receive channels 1 - 8. Press "Master Volume" and "5" buttons at the same time and then press button "1". Of course you can do the same by sending sysex message.Stefan jL wrote:There was no info on wich synth to use but midi data was only on channel one... for monotimbral synths then, but does of course work on multitimbral ones also as long they can recive midi messages on channel 1 (probably not work with Roland MT-32?).
