Unreleased ST games from the developer of Nitro!
Hello,
Thought you might like to see some screenies I just put up on my blog, from some old ST games I did (before or arount the time of Nitro):

Nothing to download yet, still in the process of sorting that out.

I very much look forward to trying these - especially if the games play as well as they look.

These looked good when you were showing the footage of them @ Byte Back.
I'll be interested in giving these a shot when a download is available.

I have no idea. They didn't contact me about it if it is...
Also, it's a BBC game (and over 21 years old now), so I suspect it's unlikely!

This game has been released ages ago but Jamie has been busy doing Mac version of Qwak to post it on here.
I am not sure why it got falcon in the url it works on the Atari ST, direct link here: http://dbug-automation.co.uk/falcon/apr09/sideways.zip
Thanks to http://dbug-automation.co.uk/ for making it possible. If you visit that website you can read the brief details about this game dated: 11/04/2009

Falcon folder is because they fixed it to work in Falcon too.

Never heard about a person "ripping" like this way since Zarmi vs Elite war's..

Re: Unreleased ST games from the developer of Nitro!
Actually, what happened was that DBug released it (weeks after sending the disk image and Falcon/HD version to Jamie for his blog) and then Pperror decided to strip out their intro text (and possibly ULS?), then re-released it though his page, saying that the ULS version was 'rubbish' because it required 1MB RAM (whereas his needed 512KB but lacked Falcon compatibility).
It's obvious that Pperror took the game from DBug, as I am the only person with the original files on PC (I dumped them from Jamie's disks), and at the time of the incident they were only available online at their site.
This monkeying around by everyone's favourite Hungarian was in fact the only 'feedback' DBug got following the release, and CJ has decided to take a break from patching games because the whole situation with the infamous troll/asshat has left him feeling seriously unmotivated.
At the end of the day, Sideways is a great piece of code, but as the game isn't finished I suppose only a few people were really interested in playing it. It's a shame, because it is a great prototype that shows what the humble ST is capable of when pushed by an experienced coder. One day, it would be great to see this one finished - if only Jamie would permit the sourcecode to be publicly released...

I second that notion. If we could just add a proper countdown of 'lives' when you die, we would have a functioning game (and STOT candidateHeavy Stylus wrote:At the end of the day, Sideways is a great piece of code, but as the game isn't finished I suppose only a few people were really interested in playing it. Yep, we had considered it for STOT and that was the problem. It's like on constant trainer mode. Being a bit of a programmer myself (though people who have seen my code will argue against itStickHead wrote:I second that notion. I'm still very grateful for Jamie and DBug's work on this, and it plays brilliantly as is.

Re: Unreleased ST games from the developer of Nitro!
I was contacted by someone about this, a few months back, someone wanting the source etc; here's how I feel about it..
I'm not sure I even have the source (maybe James could have a look on his HD? he may have got the source too, when he ripped the floppies). If the source turns up, I'm happy for it to go in to the public domain, and it anyone wants to finish the game, or use the source for educational purposes, or for informing their own developments etc; that's OK. The only thing I wouldn't be happy with, is spending time on it myself (too busy coding other stuff).
Cheers,
Jamie.

Re: Unreleased ST games from the developer of Nitro!
Jamie gave me about 4 floppy disk worth of source code and I am pretty sure the sideway scrolling which I have a copy of is the same version as the one that got released.
I've got nitro source code too and a vampire demo of his.
I'll pass the disk back to Jamie at some point and let him decide what best to do with them all.

I definitely have the source. The disks are all a bit messy though
- typical coder organisation!
If Jamie is OK with it, I will post up all his imaged disks here.
