Thorsten, how did you get it? Using Magic VDI + some disassembled output from the original NVDI?

Yes, basically. Most of it is very similar to the MVDI sources released as part of MagicMac, but there are also new parts (the loading stuff, grabbing the VDI vectors, parsing assign.sys etc).

So not *actually* NVDI then? Is this a standalone program, or are the MagiC screendrivers required as well? Sounds like a very useful alternative to NVDI 2.5.

It is actually NVDI. The archive contains just the kernel, so you have to use the screen drivers from nvdi 2.51 (nvdidrv{1,2,4,8,h}.sys), *not* the ones from MagicMacs MVDI (those were based on NVDI 3.x, and use different internal structures).

And yes, its a standalone version, which is also what makes it different from MVDI.

Hi Thorsten, so basically this is a simple easy nvdi for screen acceleration, nothing else needed? Is it just for the shifter, or will it also work with nova drivers? (when installing nvdi it asks this)

Thanks. A new "old software".
This is very interesting.... will will give this a spin.
need to dig my nvdi 2,5

is there anything on printers ?
like the original nvdi was rastering all the text and making a small view port.... issues encountered with writing a gdos printer driver for nvdi.

Should work with NOVA drivers too, but IIRC they were not part of the original distribution. At least i don't have them ;)

I don't have any printer drivers for NVDI 2.51, but if you have any, they should work as before. As mentioned, this is actually the same as version 2.51.

Just tried it on my MSTE, seems to be working just as well as the original. Good work Thorsten!

Just to clarify Thorsten, are you saying that to use this NVDI PRG in Auto, you ALSO need parts of nvdi 2.51 installed?

Yes, the screen drivers at least. I could have put them in the archive of course, but i guess you should be able to find them...

BTW, are the archives that are floating around just crippled, or haven't there been any printer drivers for nvdi 2.51? I can't even find a meta.sys driver.

Many thanks Thorsten,

Could someone (more experienced than me) prepare a minimal package with this new NVDI and needed drivers for the ST?

NVDI251.ST Contains copy of NVDI produced from sources in 2020
by ThorstenOtto - In the Auto folder plus copy of GEMSYS folder from
NVDI 250.
Run as boot disk from drive A in STEEM it seems to work fine.
Minimal testing so far, use at your own risk.

Found v2,5 on my old Syquest harddisk.
The GEMSYS only contains the fonts and video drivers.
So I guess, there's no printer support in this version.

Hi there. I recently found a problem in Notator where in the score editor pressing D, H, or W would freeze the program.

I tracked it down to the NVDI 5 I was using. If I run EmoTos by itself it no longer freezes.

Notator is painfully slow though (most noticeable on drop down menus).

I tried NVDI 2.51 and everything works again. No freezes and back to lightening speed.

I would like to use Deskpic, but this brings back the freezes.

Does anyone have a copy of the versions between NVDI 2.51 and NVDI5?

I would like to test these while I have nothing but time.

Using the Ultrasatan I can create new setups easy and then add things and find out what works and what doesn't.

Also. Why does the font in Notator change in NVDI 2.51 and is that at all editable?

one remark regarding NVDI215A.zip / NVDI251.st - there is no ASSIGN.SYS file in both of them. Unfortunately NVDI doesn't work without ASSIGN.SYS.
Below copied from NVDI installation disk which works well with Thorsten's NVDI.

Code: Select all

; Sample-ASSIGN.SYS for NVDI

; The ASSIGN.SYS file is a list of the fonts and drivers available to

Deployed Magic 620 on my MegaSTE and it turned out to be a disaster. I opted for Jinee instead of Geneva and it was unstable, in some cases there was a fall back to MAGDesk and finally my HDD got corrupted with some weird folders while capacity appears wrong -doesn't even have numbers but some characters instead. So I will have to re-install. Luckily disk was salvaged by HDDriver so I can re-use it but it requires a format, for sure. And I don't think I will go with Magic again. Was nice but having to rebuild the system every other day does not amuse me.

I now have a 14MB/FPU equipped but otherwise stock CPU Falcon running off from an SSD and two 4/16MB TTs -one is lacking the disk.
What are your suggestions for each? I've heard that MinT on Falcon is a bit slow.

Also, does EmuTOS play well with NVDI and NOVA? I have EmuTOS running first, then NOVA and then NVDI but it breaks my NOVA resolution. I have to run NVDI before NOVA to work properly but then I get a message about WD-something acc not loading properly.

Does NVDI + Nova work correctly under plain TOS? By "correctly" I mean running NovaVDI first and then NVDI. From your description it sounds like you haven't disabled/removed the NVDI screendrivers, which then kicks in when you load NVDI after NovaVDI.

Hi joska, missed your post.

I figured it out, I stripped NVDI from any screen drivers and it works without issues. But Magic broke my system.

I got a MegaSTE recently. It came with all bells and whistles (FPU, HDD), I ordered a Nova adapter and I’m waiting for the -hopefully compliant- graphics card.

Now, what I’m asking is a TOS/GEMDOS replacement or add on to allow for multitasking, hdd support (hopefully bigger than 1/2GB partition support will be provided) which is nice to the eye but also stable and robust. Ideally it’s memory footprint would be minimal and would load quickly from the hdd.
Games compatibility is a requirement as well.
Either (old) games or modern multitasking. Pick one. Only a few GEM based games are compatible with multitasking systems like MagiC (all-in-one, fast, OpenSource) or MiNT+XaAES or similar (UNIX-like, not as fast as MagiC, OpenSource).

IIRC I have run many of the D-Bug / Klaz hd/Falcon-fixed games under MiNT on my Falcon.
