Deleted the post. Not sure how you delete a person as of yet - still learning :)

Perhaps all these spammer alert posts should be merged. There's 3 seperate threads saying the same thing about different spam names and as Retro says in one of the other spam threads, 'it's looking very untidy'

On other forums I use, there is a "report this posting" so you don't have to notify an admin. I know this forum uses phpBB and I can't find a standard add-on for spam reporting. Maybe there is an add-on on sourceforge.net.

I mentioned this in another thread (after a spam post) but it was deleted so perhaps Silver Surfer didn't see it so I'll mention it again as it can possibly stop all the spam posts in one hit.

There is a way to stop the spam via a .htaccess file. Probably only Silver Surfer or poss. Brume have access to the ftp details for the forum so they would have to do it.

I presume the forum is on an apache server:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} POST
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} .seebelow1\.php*
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !.*atari-forum.com.* [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^$
RewriteRule (.*) ^http://%{REMOTE_ADDR}/$ [R=301,L]

This will prevent post being made if the referrer is not atari-forum.com
and will redirect the post back on the script that sent it. Most spam scripts are automated from a different location so only people who are on the atari-forum posting page will be able to post.

seebelow1:
Replace seebelow1 with the page name in the forum that actually posts the message once you click on submit. e.g post.php submit.php or whatever (don't add the .php though)

Also:
<Limit>
order Deny,Allow
deny from seebelow2
</Limit>

seebelow2:
If log access is available and you can see the IP or domain where the spam is coming from just replace seebelow2 with the IP e.g Deny from 1.1.1.1 or Deny from spam.com

Well yes that does sound nice but to be honest anyone that actually pays for this kind of stuff really needs their head read. You can get plenty for free and they're only going to bother with spamming if their is money to be had.

It seems obvious that the spammer accounts are being opened by humans who then leave the rest to the bots, why not adapt a system like they are now using in the LGD forums whereas before submitting posts you have to enter the answer to a simple equation???
This secondary security measure, if implemented, could of course be disabled for legitimate users, this could be classed as users who have made above a number of posts , say, 1650 or above?
This would make it harder for the spammers ;)

that's a good idea (apart from that '1650 posts' thing, of course! :lol: ).
Some kind of posting verification for those with than 10 posts should do the trick.

Why don't we implement something similar to the atari.org site or dhs.nu? They have almost completely solved their spamming problem. The post count, if for example is implemented at 2000 posts it might make certain members "spam" the forum until they reach the number ;).

Or how about a simple verification system based on pictures. There's the recent innovation where you had 9 pictures and had to click on the 4 cats on screen.

How about a similar system for us where a new member has to click on 4 Atari symbols and the other 5 are pictures of something else?
