Atari ST Demoscene Book - this Year on Kickstarter

Post by nada-san »

Hello Guys,
many of you might be involved in the making of this book already, others not.

Image

I recently started a book about the Atari ST Demoscene, about the history and the art. It's a very design-orientated coffee table book, guided by an essayistic view onto the beginning of the 16-bit era. It also tells the story of Thalion, as they were formed by demoscene members. I am glad if you support this huge project to make this become reality! :megaphone:

For more informations around the concept, please refer to my webpage:

Best regards to all of you!

Why a small section ? A big section would be better ;).

Falcon stuff? Maybe in a later part, because this book only ranges till 1990 and covers mainly the old school stuff and development of Atari ST demoscene. If this book really comes alive the next part will range until 1994, when everything falls apart. After that, i would call it "scene beyond" there will be place for more falcon and new scene stuff.

Looks promising, can't wait.

By the way, i saw on DHS that another small book covering the st scene is available: http://www.blurb.com/b/6940976-the-a-to ... -demoscene

Looks good too, as an overview of the scene.

Yes, a fine little book. I spoke with dune on the stniccc 2015 about the project. It was meant to be a gift at first. With Breakin' the Borders you will get a totally new style of book in the retro-scene, with a kind of essayistic storyline (around 50 pages to read alone) and very high quality art prints in the manner of magazines like retro-gamer, done from a professional layout-designer. It will be printed on demand and sold worldwide via Amazon and more shops.

Does anybody here remember the ATARI booth on CeBit 1990? There was a large crowd of scene demo peoples at the booth. TCB was there, TRB, Hippel, Bittner, and all others. Often it also was possible to use the STE on one of the tables at the ATARI booth to copy demo disks and try new demos on that machine. Some times even a TT. The STE still was very new at that time and many guys were happy to test their demo on that machine, and as far as I remember it was first time the TT was demonstrated in Europe in the public. I think after a few days on that STE more scene demos were running as the original ATARI STE demos, specially the TCB Sowatt was a favourite, but some Atarians asked often to run something different as they were already mad of that music. I remember that on some days one of the demo guys had his STacy with him for diskette swapping. What a wonderful week, I met a lot of interesting peoples there and kept in contact a few years.

The attached photos show a small part of my original "souvenir" (they are THE originals... :) ) collection of that phantastic week. They are still Ok.

Very cool, 1st1! I really was there, because i was on every Atari Messe instead the first one, i guess. But at these times i was living in Wuppertal. May i ask you for more photos and pictures? Have you got more contemporary stuff which also could be used to show in the book?

Thanks in advance,
Marco

I was also on the ATARI Messe in Düsseldorf in 1990, 91 and 92 for different missions. And I have been often on the "Funny Bits Computer Club" booth there, which represented the demo scene on the ATARI Messe.

Ah, good times! I remember that booth well (lurking around there back in the day many times) and fortunately the organizer of that booth (being a old atari friend) could be persuaded to join me on the STNICCC trip. It was very nice to see the old great democrews being reunited and share memories about this booth with him.

After all it was _the_ meeting point back then...
