R-TYPE DELUXE

Post by bod/STAX »

An early XMas prezzie from me. Don't unwrap till tomorrow or if you can't wait.

Install the same as all other versions press F1 on the title screen for an options menu.

The cheat is still the same and now gives you a level select option, ESC to see the end screen when playing a stage.

'SAVE.ST' is the hi-score save disk.

Still one or two things left to do if I can get the motivation.

Can't seem to get it going in Hatari v1.9.

Stuck at flashing 'STNICCC PREVIEW' screen.

Any ideas?

To elaborate;
- Im trying to run Rtype from the cosmosex translated (network) drive; when doing so, the screen fades to black, and doesnt continue

Ive copied the files to Megafile 30 now, and tried to run from there;
- I get fade to black, and then a flashing STNICCC PREVIEW!; after which there is no progression

Works fine in Steem 3.2 with TOS 1.04 and 2.06. But not on real HW - Mega STE - stucks at flashing 'STNICCC PREVIEW' screen.
Maybe some incompatibility with hard disk driver, RAM usage ?
Looks really great, so I guess that some polishing is required considering compatibility, then floppy version - would be good to know how split files onto 2 floppies. And I think that ICE packer is not best choice - there are much faster depackers around.
Would be nice to see update until orthodox Xmas :mrgreen:
Famous Schrodinger's cat hypothetical experiment says that cat is dead or alive until we open box and see condition of poor animal, which deserved better logic. Cat is always in some certain state - regardless from is observer able or not to see what the state is.

Can't get it to run on Steem SSE 3.7.0. Just a black screen.

Shame, been looking forward to seeing this.

I am able to get a bit farther with Hatari 1.9. I created an HD floppy from Hatari and copied the R-Type Deluxe files using a GEMDOS drive to the HD floppy ST image. When I reboot with that floppy, I can get past the STNICC Preview screen. Unfortunately, when I get to the main R-Type Deluxe screen, I am unable to press any key or the fire button to make the game think I inserted coins. Therefore, I am stuck on the title screen sequence.

Edit: I did not realize I had to move the joystick up to add coins. Once, I did that, I was able to play the game. I played the original version with a Pasti image in Hatari. From my short time playing it, the new Deluxe version is a far better version. The original doesn't take advantage of any of the STe's hardware scrolling and feels very sluggish. The Deluxe version is much smoother and the graphics are greatly improved.

Edit 2: Press F1 to enter the setup screen where you can load/save high-scores, adjust the sound levels, and exit to the GEM desktop.

I am sure it will need to be patched to support a hard drive install, but it works for me the way that it is now.

Amazing attention to detail in reproducing the arcade version on gameplay, feeling and graphism.
Even the way the first level fade out after killing the boss is there, blasting.

Thanks for the tip!

Created an ED disk image, copied the data to the disk, launched the game from the floppy...worked a treat.

Great update! Love how it still manages to have a real ST feel to it rather than just being a direct mimicking of the Amiga version. Fantastic bit of work, man.

Got it to run on Steem 3.2 with 4mb ram and tos 2.06. But I could only play stage 1 because the other stages and ending doesn't fit on the same floppy.
I tried running it on my 4mb STE with ultrasatan but it seems it only looks for the files from A: drive (red screen). Maybe there is an 2 disc version in the future and hd version?

What is the difference in easy/normal modes? Bullet speed?

It does indeed run from floppy under Hatari. Bloody hard game, couldn't even get past the first minute or so :) I used to be good at this game... But the second best 16 bit version I've tried yet, and just as good as the incredible CPC remake.

you need to insert a floppy disk (no matter which one) inside the main drive, if you launch the game from hard drive.

Well congrats for the beautiful graphics and the good animation (the game works from hard drive under Steem 3.7.3).
