New idea about a demo idea

Post by leonard »

Hi all,

I just want your opinion about an idea which could sounds crazy (or at beat useless). Sometime I really like to see some good screens from various famous demos. Each time I browse tons of SainT disk images, I though to the same idea:

why not create a "best of" demo disk, containing the most popular "screens" . I would like to get your opinion about the idea, and if you agree, I would like to get a good idea of "how to know the fave screens of everybody"?

without thinking a lot about it, here is a small list of mine: tcb fullscreen in cuddly, ulm paralax distorter, ziggy stardust celestial spiral, etc.

Anyone could post a list?

Re-coding them, or just compiling them together on one menu, like Persistence of Vision (POV) used to do?

Well, recompile them of course sorry. Well, yes a bit like POV, but maybe doing one and only disk, with only brainblasting screens, and a quality menu, loader, etc. (does not mean POV menus are not cool :-))

It would save a lot of disk swapping, especially if it was made hard disk compatible ;)

Very good idea

For me best screens on st are:

3D demo OVR (European)
TCB 3 (Union demo)
Red sector conversion (TLB - mind bomb)
3d doc (TCB - cuddly)
Circle screen (TRB - Alf demo)
ulm paralax distorter (ULM - Dark of the spoon)

oh I don't know these PRG files :-)

Well I imagine something more polish, with an intro, a mainmenu and a fine screen selection.

Someone has an idea how to build an online voting system? Maybe we could put a big list of megademo, and everyone could choose two screens per megademo ?

good idea. its a shame i couldnt get DBST online, as it has direct access to 1200 demoscreens with screenshots. there are however 230 screens online from my web page.

My question is little bit offtopic, but i can't get Necrosys demo by Hemoroids to work with SainT 2.0...

Works perfectly with Steem and TOS 2.06.

Saint emulation options are: STE, 1mb and TOS 2.06 img active.

But when i hit run button it just...bombs :)

Any help, pls?

Oh well...same probs with famous "Braindamage" demo by Aggression.

Steem runs it fine, but hangs after 90% demo is done.

And with Saint screen garbage begins after nicely coded Glenz part.

Do i need particular TOS image to run these demos correctly or is it bug of those 2 emulators?

The best TOS to use for STE's is 1.62 but Saint's STE emulation is still a bit experimental whereas STeem was designed from the beggining to be able to emulate an STE. On the other hand SainT has better quality sound.

yes unseen is right, SainT is designed to be STF emulator (STE is experimental, and almost run STNiccc 3d trip STE demo (by Oxygene :-)). The braindamage heavily use blitter and screenline size , which is very experimental in SainT. Better use Steem for STE stuff. On the other hand, SainT is the only one to emulate "STF" specific stuff such as 4bit sync-scroller by STCnx in the Punish your machine demo :-)

Ok I just tested a small framework lauching various screens. Could you post some of your fave screens? If you have to choose one or two screens per megademo, which part did you choose?

for ex:
cuddly: 3d-doc and fullscreen
european: bigscreen and 3d-demo
darkside: paralax distorter
mindbomb: 3d doc

others?

screens

Post by alien »

Screens I like:

* my 4 bit scroller in PYM (ST-CNX) & the one I have in the Ventura which is kind of boring but I like the font.
* Checksum's full screen rotozoomer
* ULM's hidden scroller on Crickey WAS
* Main menu of Crickey WAS
* Ziggy's Full 3d & his 3d with MCoder
* Oxygene's 3d for STNICCC
* Paulo Simoes' mega parallax & his overscan+spectrum picture thing
* All the screens from Froggies were pretty good too...
* I liked ULM's woman with a rotating waveform
* MJM's spreadpoint like demo (text and colours in Overscan)
* Phaleon main menu
* Enchanted Land!
* Interphase!
* The Thalion intro screen
* Creams' version thereof
* DHS's 3d stuff
* In oxygene's latest product there was a screen by ben(?) of OVR that rotated a cube with textures.
* Aggression's postscript zoomer thing

I guess I better stop now...

I have always loved Starlion's fullscreen Vertical Rasters from the Vodka demo (called "surprise" in the main menu). I found this effect really amazing in 1991 and was quite underrated imo :)

Besides that, those ones are among the best ever for me:
TCB's fullscreen screen (Cuddly)
TLB's Vectorball - RSI conversion (Mindbomb)
TCB's Grodan and Kvack Kvack (Sowatt)
SYNC's vectorball (Swedish New Year 2)

Overscan Demo: spectrum screens
Flipo Demo: (can not decide)

very nice to see what screen people like!

the other constrainst is that everything fit in one disk :-)

strange idea I had... seems hard to get the right choice.. And some screens are too big to fit on a disk collection :-)

Actually the test I made:

1 : CELESTIAL SPIRAL (OVR)
2 : FULLDISTORTER (ULM)'
3 : FULLSCREEN (TCB)
4 : BIG SCREEN (OVR)
5 : VECTORBALL (SYNC)
6 : 3D SCREEN (OVR)
7 : GRODAN (TCB)
8 : 3D-DOC (TCB)
9 : VECTORBALL (TLB)
0 : SURPRISE (EQUINOX)

The disk is full at 60% using good LZH packer.

It's the screen number 4 in my previous post :-) I choose it myself because I really enjoyed that screen, and I watched it a lot when I started to code in assembly

It's a shame to limit to one disk. but then if you spill onto more than one, then there's no point as POV, Ripped Off, OVR etc have already done that!

I'd vote for -

... well, pretty much what you have. Get coding, lad! :p
