Beware of fraudulent Falcon ads

Post by czietz »

A small public service announcement: A thread in the German Atari-Home forum has uncovered a big surge (maybe 10 cases in the last few days alone) in most likely fraudulent ads where Falcons are seemingly offered for sale. As of now, the scammer uses "eBay Kleinanzeigen" (eBay classified ads), which - despite its name - is a platform completely separate from the auction site. But it's possible that such ads will appear elsewhere, too, targeting buyers outside of Germany.

These ads feature:
- different sellers and locations (hacked accounts, perhaps),
- incredibly low price (e.g., 600 €),
- photos from the same two or three actual Falcons used over and over again.

The "seller" mentions that he will only ship the Falcon (no pickup by the buyer) and then insists on payment via PayPal friends & family - where no buyer protection applies. If someone actually sent money, it would be gone.

Therefore, please be extra careful, when buying a Falcon. If a price seems to good to be true, maybe it is to good to be true. Inform yourselves which payment methods offer which kind of buyer protection before agreeing to a payment.

Thanks for the heads up. So they have crossed border to Germany… we’ve had the same here in France for most of the year and it more or less stopped in December. Once or twice a week a Falcon would appear on a French classified site, seller would only take bank transfer, communicate only through SMS, price is around 600€ and account is less than a month old.
Once, one of them was in the same city as me, as soon as I proposed to pickup the falcon the guy never answered and the ad disappeared, only to reappear in a different city the next day.
So, yes it seems they cross borders…

Hi

Cross similar situation on Shpock.
Atari Falcon for 800€ seller was providing lots of pictures.
This seller was asking for PayPal F&F payment.
When I asked for pickup (Item in NL) seller responds that he is now living in Spain and that one of this relatives will handle shipment and that he does not want to bother more his relatives with pickup and in person meeting.
Then he stops replying to me. Ads was removed few hours later and was republished two to three weeks after with another account. (Same price, pictures and description)
Rise an alert to Shpock customers support with no effect.

Cheers

Bummer, not good when people take advantage of you and especially when they actually step on your desire to buy something you always wanted.

I remind people of my case this summer: https://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=41004

Sad indeed. Not only there's a real danger of losing money but it will only increase the paranoia everywhere -- in a few months you won't be able to sell two wires without 1st class tracked shipment via DHL paid by a triple insured and protected payment because people will see scam everywhere (not that I sell that much stuff but it happened to me lately, proposing a bank transfer seemed like an insult).

It does not happen only on pricy Falcon...

Here is the original, maybe:

And here is the fraud, taken the same pictures:

Be carefull!

Maybe most safe is to pay on pickup on place. If they deny, then there is some fake.

By my calculations that robbing Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak took enough tax money from me to buy a second hand Atari Falcon last year :(

I have fun with phone computer support scammers:
When they say "Can you switch on your computer", I say I've got a ZX Spectrum. It says (c) 1982 Sinclair Research.
Or "Have you removed the copy protection from Dungeon Master?!"
I then tell them promptly to f*** off.

There are also accounts that sell Atari ST, STE and MegaSTE, as well Amiga 500 / 600 / 1200 from rare countries, where these computers are more than extremely rare to find or impossible.

-Such North Africa, Colombia... telling bizarre histories about address changes, they want to sell to correct people / collector, only bank transfers...

You can imagine what happen if you pay... you will receive nothing at all,

It's an estimation of how much you can "save" by buying that 2nd hand product.

This falcon was in a scam as well, serial number 2001518
