FreeMint/Sparemint RPM batch installation tool

Post by Dal »

Hi,
Maybe one already existed, but I thought it was good practice for my rusty bash skills. Please critique - let me know what's good and not so good! :)
rpminst.zip
Introduction
------------
Here's a simple batch RPM installer script inspired by my recent experiences
installing FreeMINT on my Atari Falcon.

I have been installing FreeMINT using the tutorials at phsw.atari.org and
after a few installations, grew tired of rolling in the 37 base RPMs by hand.
So, I decided to write a small routine that can make this process easier for
me (and anyone else). This is the end result.

What it does
------------
RPMINST consists of two files:
rpminst.sh ---> the BASH script that does all the work
rpmlist.txt --> the manifest file (a sequential list of the RPMs to install)

Simply, the routine iterates through the manifest and attempts to install each
RPM in turn. If the RPM command returns an error, you are prompted to retry
the installation of that package or move onto the next (I found that the rpm
command under FreeMINT sometimes fails to complete the download, so this has
proved handy). Once complete, you get a summary of all the packages installed.
The script also outputs a log file, so you get an idea of what happened in the
event things don't turn out the way you expect them to.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Right - how are your auto-update scripts working?
Are you downloading the /noarch and /m68mint/ directory contents from www.atariforge.net and then matching the basenames and comparing the version numbers against the output of "rpm -qa"?
