How to connect Atari TT to a modern Monitor ?

Post by supergau »

Hello people,
after reading the very good and helpful topic "ST to VGA - success!" i am searching for an alternative way to connect a modern monitor or TV to the Atari TT.
I have four of them and my old Eizo 6500 21"-CRT has gone...:(
Due to pure random circumstances I got a nearly new und unused Eizo 6500 from our local university together with several MegaST's during a total cleanup of their device stocks.
So the Eizo hopefully will extend the time, when I will badly need a real alternative for an ECL-Monitor...
Nevertheless does somebody here in the group know a good way to connect a standard monitor, TFT etc. without the use of a VME-Card like "Nova" ( very rare, hard to find and also very old ) ?
Maybe it's another case for allison ?
I'am sure that there are other TT-Users outside, who won't miss the good TT-high-res mode...
Hopefully waiting for many answers to fill this topic with life:)
many thanks

until someone else makes a replacement for the shifter and TTvideo ic's in atari X
in fpga and vdac whats the point in talking about
more than to just give a link to another converter box as ive done also
the problem is the dam chips in atari not the standards or converters

i just cant be bothered to make one when there is other paths thats work well enough
there is many with this field as there choosen field and work can do it using 1 fpga chip and 20 mins 3 days developmenet with the right c libs and linkers

but dont for nothing £0 , $0

they want cash and the market isnt big enough

i cant spare the time and effort so thats that

sorry simbo, didn't mean to put you under pressure!

tbh, that ebay link looks good, it would probably cost that much to make one. I'm tempted to buy one and see if it works

I don't understand? The TT has a VGA connector so it's just to connect a VGA monitor to it and it works without any extra hardware? I'm using a standard VGA monitor on my TT.

yes that is true
you can connect a standard LCD monitor to it as well
but the display resolution is not so high - you cannot get even 800x600
which is the max resolution of a standard stock Falcon
To get above the 640x480 you will need to use a Nova or a CrazyDots card on the TT

Yes on the Falcon the RGB mode is higher than VGA, but on the TT (that the topic was about) I don't think you can get higher than 640x480 anyway? If you don't use a separate graphic card or use the TT high res, but that's another matter anyway.

On the Falcon it could be nice to be able to use the highcolor mode in 640x480, but then you need extra hardware to do it on a VGA screen.

we're talking about TT-High here which is 1280x960 B&W... which is not VGA it's ECL. An unusual but not uncommon format used on higher end workstations like Sun's etc, it's signalling is digital rarther than analog (VGA) so you need a special monitor to use it... or an adaptor

Hi dexterslab,
that is exactly, what I was talking about!
I am only interested in using the TT-Highres only ( 1280x960 ) !! It's an ECL-Output.
Is the mentioned EXTRON-Adapter in one of the posts above capable of doing the job or does anybody here know another adapter, who can be used to make the TT-Highres available ?

Perhaps - somebody already knows an alternative "modern" monitor who can be used without any adapter on the TT for Highres...?

theoretically yes it should work... but i suspect you'll need to mod the cable to tell the TT to switch into TT-High, IIRC you have to pull a pin high or low on the VGA port to do this, kinda similar how the ST-High works on the ST monitor output.

i'm tempted to buy the adaptor and see, but given i have a crazydots card it's something i dont really need

i have the converter here now, just need to make up some custom cables

@supergau (or anyone else for that matter):
do you know what the vertical and horizontal refresh rates are for tt-high?

update:

got my tt to switch into tt-high by grounding pin 9, but i'm blind without a real ecl monitor to test but i can see much higher h & v sync output frequencies from the tt with my oscilloscope.

Though i couldn't find any ecl signal, i'd expected the pixel data to show up on pin 4 or 15... unless i'm not understanding something?

i'm also waiting now on the pinouts for the extron box

If I recall right vertical is 72 Hz, so horizontal must be about 70 kHz.

I once owned an adaptor to connect TT-High to VGA, but I gave it to someone who wanted to give it to someone who wanted to see if it can be re-built. I never saw it again or heard something about it. But the quality was really poor.

There have been discussions in a german newsgroup:

http://groups.google.de/group/maus.comp ... T+High+VGA

http://groups.google.de/group/maus.comp ... ECL&lnk=ol&

Hope you know german ;)

There is not much hardware needed as I understand it.

The reason you see no pixel-data may be because it's all white (but I'm rather dumb on that topic).

yes, any aftermarket video card will be fine on old or new vga monitors.

it's only because the built-in tt-high uses a now defunct system called ECL
