Milan network issues with magicnet

Post by Mark_G »

This is a small description of my network installation issues I got on my milan.
I hope that someone can use this info. Or if he/she succeed where I failed, then he/she may complete this document.

On my milan040 with Magic 6.2, I installed magxnet (magicnet), and I got the following results :

Tested cards :

1. ISA RTL 8019
I installed the ENEM.MIF driver with SOCKET.DEV from magicnet in GEMSYS\MAGIC\XTENSION folder. I got ENEM.MIF from ‘etherne.zip’ from Thomas Redelberger.

System hangs, until I removed the slip.mif file out of the xtension folder.

So slip.mif and enem.mif are not compatible.

2. PCI RTL 8029 and PCI RTL 8139
I downloaded the ne2kmpci.xif driver from AssemSoft - Odd Skancke. I renamed it to *.mif, and placed them in the xtension folder.
The milan wouldn’t boot properly.

3. PCI RTL 8139
I downloaded the RTL8139.XIF driver from AssemSoft - Odd Skancke. I renamed it to *.mif, and placed them in the xtension folder.
The milan wouldn’t boot properly.
I’ve done this because the 8139 card is an 100 MBit card, and some people reported that magicnet is compatible with mintnet in such a way that you can simply rename the drivers from *.xif to *.mif.

This didn’t work for me.

Tested programs :

PING
With an installed magicnet, I can ping easily inside, and outside my network, also to dns servers was no problem. (ping http://www.google.com)

CAB 2.7
First I tried with the cab.ovl file delivered with the magicnet package.
I couldn’t get Cab2.7 to work. Network was not reachable.

Solution :
I Installed gluestik from magicnet in the \GEMSYS\MAGIC\START\ folder, with the correct
\STIK_CFG\ DEFAULT.CFG file. For that I copied the DEFAULT.CFG from my sting setup.

Then I used the “Olivier Booklage” Cab.ovl.

I can surf now. After a while of inactivity and with cab running, the computer will hangs.
I need to invest this better.
18nov08: I reseated the mouse and his connectors to the motherboard, and cab works fine now. No computer lock anymore when using cab.

BNET
I can say it short : I installed before bnet on a falcon with mintnet and a falcon with magicnet.
I could transfer large files over the network. (files > 5Mb). The falcon with mintnet is now out of service. (Transfo from external HD is gone).

I’ve also a TT030 with bnet on sting.
So I installed bnet on milan. Didn’t work. I got some writing error. Need to invests this further.

Hello,

I Installed bnet on my falcon with mintnet, on a falcon with magic 5, and my milan with magic 6.2
As harddisk ddriver, I use hddriver 7.80

I can transfer files from my 'falcon mintnet' <-> 'falcon magic' (however, window only visible at 'falcon magic')
I can see the milan-drives from my 'falcon magic'. This is a sign that there is actually a connection.

If I try to make a connection from my milan to the 'falcon magic', I always get SOCKWRITE ERROR!

Does someone knows what's wrong ?
For bnet, on the milan, I've used the same config as on the 'falcon magic'.
Also on the milan, I can surf the www-net, and I can ping the falcons.

BTW, smbclient for magic don't work good on the 'falcon magic', and I got the same problems, but in less quantities, on the milan.
I've troubles with transferring large files. First I thought I got a problem with my clockpatch on the falcon, but I've the same problems on the milan too. The machine hangs in the middle of a transfer when I transfer some large files, or even refuses to transfer the file.

For mintnet I don't have a problem at all.

Does someone has good idea's ?

Can I use Jinnee as Desktop Manager on a mint installation, without to much hassles ?

I'm afraid I can't help you with your network problems under MagiC, as I haven't installed MagiC on my Milan yet...

Yes, Jinnee works fine under MiNT/XaAES, lots of people use this. I've tested it myself, and it works fine. I had to hack Jinnee slightly to avoid the delay and error message that it can't load editobj.slb though. I can't recall what I did though! I normally don't use Jinnee, I prefer Teradesk myself.

I copied EDITOBJ.SLB from a Magic setup into the MINT folder. It doesn't seem to be working for everybody, as far as I can remember. Might depend on which MiNT version you're running.

Sounds a bit scary to me.. editobj.slb is not really an SLB (shared library), it's a loadable AES extensions intended for MagiC only. I don't know why Andreas chose to wrap it in a SLB. I guess it simply fails to install when Magic isn't present, so it's *probably* OK to load it under MiNT. I wouldn't do it though ;-)
